Christchurch: La Porchetta in Riccarton was great. Lone Star. Misceo (sometimes). Raspberry Cafe is brilliant, but you have to book about 3 weeks in advance. Jackflash was brilliant. |

I'd love to hear of any kid-friendly restaurants for the under 5's in Auckland for a book I am writing - free mention for the restaurant in the book too!
Many thanks! Steph |

In Christchurch...
Va Voom Cafe in the Parklands Shopping Centre is great - they have a little play area for the kids with a few toys and books and paper and pens for colouring in. They also do a healthy kids platter (with a few options) which is great. They have highchairs available and the staff are always very friendly and helpful.
The cafe at the top of the gondola is also great for kids - they have a little play area and there is also plenty of room for them to run around. |

I'd also give Fusion in Herne Bay the big thumbs-up for kid friendly. I'd also recommend the Horse and Trap in Mt Eden and Sal Rose in Mt Albert. |

What is "kid friendly"?????
I have my own ideal, and the mind boggles. However, what DO parents expect/want from their dine-out with child/ren experience???
Please define for the neophite "KID FRIENDLY"??? |

Well, for us, with a 4yr old and a 10yr old, the minimum for kid friendly in our opinion is that there are a couple of meals available that are [a] smaller, and thus [b] less expensive, and hopefully [c] appealing to children (i.e. not duck l'orange or Thai Green Curry!)
Often when we have our children and are trying a new restaurant, we find we're having to order a $23 Fish Of The Day and ask for two plates so we can split it. Then the younger one doesn't eat half of it, so there's a collective *sigh* all 'round.
Having a kid-friendly menu printed up in black and white with a picture on it to colour in accompanied by a $3 box of crayons on hand actually goes a long way to keeping the custom of parents.
I know personally that we get very few opportunities to have dinner sans-kids, so we're always on the lookout for good restaurants (i.e. those that the ADULTS will enjoy) that cater for our children also.
Helpful? |

Thanks for that SepticMan. I did appreciate your specific response and it was helpful, and enlightening. My worst fear, I will admit, was perhaps "kid friendly" entailed an environment where children were allowed to run rampant and be indulged. Whew...great to see your wishes are just to include well behaved children in a restaurant experience. What a shame that you find it difficult to do so. Good luck with your future restaurant picks. And in future I will try not to be so banal about the term "kid friendly". Again, thanks for your response. |

Pleasure! I would suspect that the great majority of parents would also take umbrage with rampant children in a restaurant. And, I applaud your response and evolution (for want of a better word!) in opinion.
On a related note, I visited the Powder Keg in Ohakune recently and had a good meal there, and give them the big kid-friendly tick. In fact I would go so far as to say they delivered the BEST kids' meal we've ever seen. Really varied and nutritious (they got chicken that came with potatoes, cauliflower, parsnip, broccoli, pumpkin and bok choi -- all covered in a gravy that meant even our fussy four-year-old ate the whole lot!) and with kid's menus and crayons. And this in a bar atomosphere where most of the punters wouldn't have even realised kids were on the premises (the rugby on a big screen in the background, and barely standing room available). Well thought out and executed -- yay them! |

yay, just what I always wanted in a restaurant that "catered" for parents who could not establish restaurant etiquette boundaries.
