A friend who spent his student days down in Dunedin can't stop talking about this place, but having taken his recommendation and tried one of their burgers for myself, I can't say that I share the same sentiment. The menu is hung awkwardly on the wall directly above a row of stools, nearly always occupied as the few booths fill up quickly, meaning that I felt pressured to make a hasty decision so as not to appear to be staring at the people sitting there. I picked something like the cajun chicken with aioli, and while the chicken was tasty enough, it was dwarfed by a bun that looked like a sad attempt to trick me into thinking that I was getting much more for my money. Next time I want a burger I'll head somewhere else. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

I tried out their burgers and was definitely disappointed. The burgers are over priced for what you get, the burgers have no taste and are nothing different from any other burger joint for less than the price they charge. Their service is the worst, i have never been to a store where the service is worse than the food. They always mess up the orders and give the wrong food to the wrong people. The only decent thing about this place is the chips but like i said, you can get good chips somewhere else for less than the price they charge. I once waited 25 mins for one serving of chips because they screwed up the order and didnt even apologise and said they will just cook up some more. Honestly, I wouldnt bother going to this place, its too expensive and the service is the most crappiest, disgusting and unfriendliest i have ever experienced. Have been here a few times and have received some horrible service mainly from the guys that work there, and all they seem concerned about are there friends who keep coming and going and lose track of orders, mess orders up and give orders to the wrong customer. I have rated there food good because there chips are really good, aioli is just average is cheaper and taster to make it at home your self, there burgers are over priced and have no taste, for the high price they charge its not worth it burgers start from around $15 and not worth that much. Overall this place is not customer friendly unless you know the workers well, I highly do not recommend anyone go there we wont be visiting again due to there lack of customer service. not sure if there aware of this but poor customer service = bad feed back spreading word around town and never going there again. My husband and I wanted a quick tea on Friday night after arriving in Dunedin. We settled on Velvet Burger as we had heard good things about it. I ordered the Hottie Burger without chilli mayo, as I am not allowed raw egg at the moment and the person serving us informed us that the mayo did have raw egg in it. The Hottie burger is usually the mayo, chilli sauce, a beef pattie, salad, chutney and grilled mango slices. I was a bit disappointed when got back to my hotel room to find that they had omitted the chilli sauce as well as the chilli mayo from my burger, as I had only requested no mayo and therefore my burger was not a "Hottie" at all.
My side order of kumara chips was the average taste of most kumara chips as I think most chains get them commercially prepared from the same place.
My husband ordered the hangover cure burger and proclaimed it to be one of the best burgers he had tried.
I was slightly annoyed at the omitted chilli sauce, but it is a small oversight and I may try them again if I am back in Dunedin and feel like a decent burger. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

We went for a burger on a Saturday night. Walking past, the place looked busy so we thought we would try it. What a disappointment. $48 for 2 burgers, 1 small bowl of chips and 2 beers was really excessive. The burgers were OK, not very much fish in the fish burger (what was there was tasty though), the venison burger was alright. I wouldnt rave about them at all and I wont be going back. One of the best burgers around New Zealand.
Their chips are always cooked to perfection and the aoli is the star. Burgers are pretty well put together but can get messy, what burgers can't?!
Top notch. even better on a late night in town. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook« There are reviews older than 18 months, click here to show them » Add your review to Velvet Burger10,651 views
