Modern cafe on Taranaki St Wharf. A la carte and counter-top dishes, exemplary service, and idyllic location. Contemporary Maori decor and a very local atmosphere. Child-friendly.
Karaka Cafe can comfortably seat up to 100 people, both inside and out on the large al fresco dining area. Named for the karaka fruit located in the karaka grove, the bright colours and generous floor to ceiling windows really bring the outside in. Karaka Cafe offers a wide range of both a la carte and counter-top dishes, all beautifully presented. If you're short on time, there are delicious Danishes, sandwiches and cakes. Try a silky smooth hot cocoa or a healthy soy flat white, and enjoy Sunday brunch with the newspaper and beautiful water views.
Available for private hire most evenings. Table reservations welcome.
This eatery in its very attractive location has been established for several years but we had not dined there previously. We chose it to belatedly celebrate my wife's birthday. On arrival at noon last Wednesday for lunch, we were very glad that we had booked, as the eatery was crowded on a lovely summer's day, especially the tables with brollies outside on the terrace overlooking the 'Boatshed' lagoon. We were shown to one of these reserved for us and were grateful for the shade of our brolly. We noted that some patrons were sitting or reclining on the stepped-down grassed terrace almost to the water's edge in front of us.
The eatery has a very attractive menu with a number of options for lunch in particular. For those so choosing, a good range of counter food is displayed. I opted for the Caesar salad burger from the menu, being chicken, bacon, fried egg, lettuce & mayo on ciabatta, whilst my wife settled on the paua fritter on sourdough bread with watercress & aioli. Both our meals were enjoyable. We accompanied our meals with a glass of our chosen riesling or pinot gris, and followed them by sharing a slice of delicious cheesecake from the cabinet.
Our meals were attractively presented, but my mine kept slipping off the edge of the small flat wooden board on which it was served. Fortunately for my wife, her dish had a lipped edge which kept her meal intact. Given the huge crowd, service was prompt and efficient, with ever helpful waiters circulating amongst the tables and available to serve as required. It was a truly memorable experience and we will no doubt be back sometime soon.
