We popped in for lunch on Labour Day, when we were on our way home to Christchurch.
They didn't have a surcharge.
We enjoyed a light lunch, I had scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast, with 2 extra slices of toast that could be enjoyed with provided butter and jam.
My partner just had a lemon slice.
Both dishes were really good and the service was down to earth and friendly.
The coffee is excellent.
This was a very pleasant way to break up a long drive from Blenheim to Christchurch.

I had been playing follow the leader for several hours on State Highway 1 from Blenheim and the accrued tedium was excruciating, to say the least. Articulated stock trucks aplenty were painfully grinding their way up the slow, winding hills along this picturesque route on this day, Queen’s Birthday Monday, amidst long lines of heavy traffic.
I had decided to stop for lunch at the Montana Winery Restaurant on my way out of Blenheim as everyone had said it would be open. Alas! All closed up at 1pm so on I went, thinking there might be a nice little spot just off the main road in the Awatere Valley. Silly me!
I had little motivation to stop in Kaikoura so motored on, somehow knowing that Cheviot would not let me down. And so it was…….
The Paddock is a 1920s character house that was relocated from a Christchurch suburb about 10 years ago and resurrected as a wine bar/ restaurant to serve the local community as well as the passing tourist. I have stopped there once or twice over the years and knew it to be nothing remarkable but certainly a preferred option to the sterility of other tearoom style cafes in the town.
I was thirsty, irritable, hungry and ever so slightly road weary on arrival but was quickly at ease in the beautifully warm, log fire warmed restaurant space. There’s something about a cosy, timber floored room, leadlight windows and country hospitality.
I’ve lost track of the number of seafood chowders I’ve eaten over the past few months and this one was as good as any; plenty of colourful, flavoursome ingredients, great overall taste, perhaps just a tad light on consistency but a dish that quite adequately met my needs on this occasion.
I followed this up with a homemade beef and port pie which came with mashed potatoes. No prizes for presentation on this one but it was a delicious casing. The downside was the very gristly filling which rendered the pie a borderline throwaway for me. Others may well expect this but I would very much have preferred better. You may think this pathetically precious of me perhaps? If you enjoy gristle and like your teeth bouncing and “spongebobbing” their way through the food you’re eating then, by all means, make your way to The Paddock and get yourself one of these pies!

This is the second time I have stopped here on a trip back from Nelson. Warm friendly, country service. The pumpkin and capsicum soup was excellent. The chocolate and raspberry brownie was to die for YUMMY! It just melted in my mouth after that long drive.
I will certainly be back for some good ole Kiwi hospitality
