We heard from friends about the platters they serve at Wakefields - and went on a Sunday to get a taster. Choosing the breads, the veggie choice, the lamb and the scallops - it was delicious and although a smaller portion than expected, we enjoyed it!
The size of the platter, in hindsight, gave us the chance to have a dessert, too - however we opted for an ice cream at the beach - next time we will try Wakefields own :-)

Went on a Sunday lunchtime. The service was exemplary with good attention to detail. The environment in the courtyard/patio are was pleasant with the shade sail to help protect us from sun.
The food that we both had was Gurnard with a potato and rocket cake with asparagus served on the side. The portion sizes were generous and the fish and asparagus were both well cooked and very tasty. The potato and rocket cake could have done with more seasoning such as lemon or a spice like cumin but was still pretty good.
The pudding double chocolate tart was very tasty although the base was lacking in a full taste.
The drinks were tasty and well served along with the attention to detail when dealing with our new born baby.
Inside looked a bit dark and not that interesting and the toilets were adequate. All in all a nice experience in Sumner and reasonably priced for what it was.

We went here one Tuesday night out of desperation as we live Sumner. It was cold. My mother and I ate with our jackets on and this is also the reason we didn't stay for coffees. The entree didn't come until mains were served (apparently due to miscommunication between waiter and chef). The mains - the steak was ordered at medium-rare but was certainly a medium-well done as no blood ran. Chicken dish was nice and greatly presented. Lamb shank was tough and lacked flavour. Presentation was below average!

The sands of time have worked their weary magic and largely erased much of the memory of my last visit to Wakefields over seven years ago. What does remain centres on a libationary nine bottle night of riotous good cheer with a happy group of bon vivants.
This time it was just two of us at close to 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant was quiet and although the kitchen was closing at 3 our waitress arranged for us to dine.
This was one of those rare occasions when I was the passenger rather than the driver of the conveyance in which our journey had been made and so felt well within my rights to indulge in a drink or two. I began with a small bottle of Deutz Marlborough Cuvee as I had been missing the beauty of the steadily rising bubbles, the toastiness and fruit of this style; it was an excellent way to start a late lunch in the almost hallowed presence of the old external (now internal) volcanic rock walls that comprise the structural torso of this very quaint old building, sympathetically altered by architects Warren & Mahoney approximately 14 years ago.
Bic Runga’s dulcet, youthful tones massaged the atmosphere for us as we scanned the menu and absorbed what we could of this little piece of old Sumner town.
With cool water to dilute the consequences of my sparkling indulgence I was decisive in selecting the Fish of the Day, Tarakihi , which came to me larger than life......almost! A substantial filet of fish, beautifully prepared and squatting atop a bed of sticky, aromatic, herb flavoured rice, a delight to not only behold but to eat as well. I paired this with an Allan Scott Unwooded 2007 Chardonnay at $8.50 a glass and relished the clean finish that this offered, sufficiently understated so as not to overtly challenge the flavours on offer on my plate.
A small cheeseboard consisting of Puhoi Blue, a nondescript cheddar and a brie drew our afternoon to a gentle, relaxing close. The coffee was absolutely fine and the waitress who looked after us during our visit was skilled in her craft, commendably polite and helpful.
It may be a few years before I get to return to Wakefields but I will not stand in anyone else’s way should they be looking for a clean, interesting restaurant with good food, wine and even a private room for upwards of 14-16 people.
