Lovely wife and i go to this place at least once every two months and to be honest we have never been disappointed. It all depends on what you order as with any restaurant .We find the portions adequate and we generally have a small starter and two mains and our favourite NAAN bread with fruit and nuts is more than enough.Flavours to me are more important than quantity and we will be going back again soon.

Not too bad for a standard indian meal. First time in my dining experience we have had to send back a jug of water!
Typical scenario. A Restaurant fills jugs of water and leaves them in the fridge, and doesnt rotate or tip out at the end of the night, hence old funny tasting water. Not a pleasant experience.
Nothing memorable or worth returning for.

This place used to have the best food in Christchurch. What a shame that is a thing of the past. The chef has changed since our last visit, and the food is now a horrible tangy sweet past shadow of the once wonderful aromatic curries we used to experience. I do not intend to come back. Wake up Raj!

It is comforting to know that the Raj Mahal, which has been in business on the corner of Manchester and Worcester Streets, Christchurch , since 1993, is still able to deliver quality Indian cuisine, most of the time, to its loyal customers . There's something different and appealing about the almost un-Indian feel of the place as there are almost no trinkets, wall hangings, Indian paraphenalia etc around the room apart from two sets of, presumably faux, elephant tusks, coming through the wall above the bar.
It is invariably busy on a Friday night and so it was a relief to get a table as a ‘walk in’. I hadn’t booked because I was meeting an old friend from Jakarta and no plans had been made beforehand on what cuisine to have. I think it would be fair to suggest that Raj Mahal turned out to be a good choice overall, subject to my comments below regarding the main course.
With a jug of cold water and two bottles of Kingfisher beer, the evening started well, progessing to a Poppadam Platter with pickles, chutney and raita then, for me, Raj Mahal Hara Murgh, which is one of the this restaurant’s signature dishes. This was chicken cooked with coriander & cream, finished in a smooth, green capsicum sauce and, as with most dishes, came with rice. Whilst I do enjoy Indian cuisine immensely there are times when I feel the sauces completely and utterly overwhelm the meat or vegetable content of the dish, leaving you with what is very much a bowl of thick, rich, spicy liquid with a few chunks of chicken (or whatever) embedded therein. This was one of those and I was barely able to finish the meal as a consequence.
The coffees were hot and strong.

We really enjoyed our dinner here last night. The curries had a lovely flavour, though two of us thought our curries were a bit runny. One of my friends ordered a 'mild' vindaloo (just shows how crazy she is - blew her socks off). The staff were very friendly and seemed to appear when required.

On their last night in New Zealand, my inlaws and us had dinner at Raj Mahal. They had been there before, about a week ago and really enjoyed the experience, service and food.
This has been the best dinner experience ever, really good service and when asked about the different dishes, we were given a clear and good description.
I really would like to recommend this Indian place.

Dined here last week with a large group and the food and service was very good, the naan was fresh and hot and the curries all had very individual tastes rather than the sometimes similiar flavours you can get with indian. The restaurant is a bit bare and dark but adequate and made up for by the food and service. I would especially recommend group dining here - they used a grid of our table to take all our food and drink orders which made it very easy to settle our portion of the bill. On the higher end price wise for indian ($77 for two - a shared starter, 2 mains, 1 bread and 3 drinks) but we left very full and satisifed.
