We have been twice to At Tony's in the last couple of months. First time we order from the menu, the second time we went for the All You Can Eat option.
The a la carte dishes were good in size and came in a timely manners. Me and my friend went for the meat selection. One kind of meat was prepared at a time, and came with vegetables and rice. It was very delicious. As for the All You Can Eat, we had different kind of meat and fish/seafood selections, and it was very good.
Both times we had Sushi for starters, which were exceptional and still the best I had here in Christchurch. The restaurant is not the cheapest, but the food is well worth it. We will definitely go back there.

Chose dining @ Tony's this wintery Sunday evening as a treat for our three young sons for excelling in homework :o)
It's one of their favourite restaurants and we always enjoy watching the marvels of the chefs behind the teppanyaki bar.
This was the first time we were sat at a table as opposed to right on the bar, and I have to say the atmosphere was no less enjoyable than any other time.
It was slightly chilly with our table right next to the door though, and toward the end I was looking to my jacket for it's puffy warmness.
Both my husband and I were warmed by the friendly service towards our children, our 10 year old being super excited to have used chopsticks for the majority of his meal, was then challenged by the wait staff to attempt his dessert with them too.....he was successful.
The only thing I would say we were slightly disappointed with was just how small the children's meals were, although still good value for money, with three growing boys we'll prob need to opt for the adult menu from now on.

Went as a group of 6, sat at the Teppenyaki bar.
There was initial confusion with booking as they had us on a regular table but had booked for the Teppenyaki bar, finally realised had two names the same.
We had the set Teppanyaki meals with a selection of meats and was done wonderfully.
Menu has a great variation of food to cater for most tatses.
Winelist where it had some nice wines, it did have some wines that were just over the top, which is a shame, more reasonably priced wines and leave out the expensive ones would be a good idea.
All in all a good night was had by all, oh yeah Sake was nice, but at $25 for a "large" seemed a bit pricey. But it certianly warms the body up.

Nice fresh food, good service. There was a consistent standard throughout the night; nice but nothing spectacular. Not alot of ambience. Nice fresh produce used- (salad/ veges).

I agree with the previous reviewer. I've been to @Tony's several times for the $10 lunch that they do during the week but have decided I don't want to spend my one bit of time out of the office for the day in such a dark, gloomy restaurant. The service doesn't do much to uplift the place either - the waitress is OK, but she never smiles. The food is usually really nice and the lunch deal is good, but last time I was there I had the teriyaki chicken and had to keep removing grissly bits from my mouth, which made me decide, there are plenty of better places I could go.

At Tonys Japanese Restaurant has seen many a season in its location on vehicle-clogged Riccarton Road. There has been no attempt to change what must be considered, by the owners, a time-tested, successful formula but I can’t help wondering why the entrance to this pleasant little eatery continues to look and feel like the ground floor foyer of a cheap office building - which is, in fact, what it is.
The night of my visit there was a nonedescript melamine style table adjacent to the main entry door , seeming not to serve any useful purpose and looking like something that belonged in a school or underfunded government department.
Once inside, the restaurant offers little more in the way of inspiration and, for the non-local, could prompt some anxiety as to whether the food is likely to be as bland as the décor, or lack of…
Our table, just inside the front door, was less than half a metre from a table, roughly piled up with menus & wine lists and with three or four dining chairs stacked at one end. Hardly a visual treat for a restaurant with a reputation to uphold.
Service throughout was fair to reasonable, the food comparable to other Japanese Restaurants in Christchurch so slightly better than average at best. There were no appreciable delays in getting our meals and our waitress was simply courteous, no more than that.
A shared Assortment of Sushimi, 20 pieces, was a great way to start and at $20, quite fairly priced. Large slices of such delights as Salmon, Tuna, Crayfish, Beef Tatoki, Venison Tatoki etc featured.
For mains we luxuriated in Seafood & Ostrich, an array of prawns, scallops, salmon, white fish, mussels and 90gm of the Ostrich meat. All beautifully prepared and cooked.
To accompany this and share, although the others at the table also ordered non-share mains, there was Tori-Katsu, deep fried crumbed pork tenderloins served with Tonkatsu sauce.
Overall, I would probably bypass Tony’s in the future as there are many better Japanese eateries in the city. Perhaps their Teppan Yaki is more highly regarded? You tell me!

This is a really good place to go for a night out, the entertainment provided by the teppenyaki chefs is fantastic, to be able to see your food getting cooked in front of you for a change is a different experience.
The dessert was to die for, a banana wrapped in a pancake in a delicious honey and orange sauce...a must try!
At Tony's isn't BYO but nonetheless the staff were very helpful and were smiling!

Our most disappointing Teppan Yaki experience. There was no entertainment from the Teppan chef who slogging away in front of us cooking what seemed like the whole restaurant's meals, one meal was incorrect and they only let kids order from the kids menu on a Sunday?! It was anything but an intimate experience as the waitress repeatedly reached over our heads to take dishes from the chef. It was like sitting in the middle of the kitchen! I wouldn't bother going back, we've tried twice and both times were a real disappointment.

@ Tony’s offer a great lunch menu at very affordable prices. All set meals (rice and miso soup included) are priced at only $10.00. Options include Teriyaki Chicken, Grilled Beef, Okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza), Curry, Assortment of Sashimi, and more. There is also the Bento Box Set or the Teppan Yaki Lunch Set, both priced at $22.00. My friend enjoyed his Oyako Donburi (tender chicken pieces in a Japanese omelette served over rice), but since he has a bigger appetite the portion was slightly unsatisfactory for him. I ordered the Assortment of Tempura Set; there was a good variety of seafood and vegetables, but the batter was a bit heavy and too greasy. The food is not overly spectacular or authentic, but you have to admit that a 12-piece Sashimi Set with rice and miso soup included for just $10.00 is a fairly decent deal. @ Tony's have branded themselves "the 5 Star Restaurant with the 3 Star Price". I agree with the latter, but the food still leaves room for improvement for me. [by M.Y.]

I'm a complete novice when it comes to Japanese food. In fact, I'm a complete novice when it comes to Asian food. To put it simply, I don't eat it. So when I was given an opportunity to go to At Tonys Japanese Restaurant to try the teppanyaki, I was a little nervous of what I was going to get. To put it simply, the teppanyaki set menu was excellent. It begins with an appetiser, which while small is packed full of flavour. I chose the assorted sashimi (while in Rome, do what the Roman's do...so to speak), which was equally superb. You are then delivered a bowl of Miso soup before the action begins. The teppanyaki chefs are amazing. Their skill with their twirling of the utensils (including the knife!) is simply awesome to watch. It's really a huge part of the experience. The food is cooked in front of you (if you're at the bar) and is all succulent, tender, and delicious (ostrich for me). The one downer is that the dessert wasn't that flash but the rest of the experience was simply awesome. We're already preparing for our next visit (eating our way around the menu)!
