My wife and I were hungry for pizza and had been curious about Hot Rock as the restaurant has always looked inviting as we drove by.
We were warmly greeted and promptly seated. There were about 14 different combinations on the menu and an evening special. We could not decide and ordered the "Naked" pizza - (sauce, mozzarella, and basil) although we added pepperoni. The large is 12" (30 cm) and with the pepperoni added cost 20.50.
We also ordered a small, a 9" (22 cm) size, special pizza - spring lamb, kumara, and tomato, for $16.50 (a large would have cost us $26.50).
Our pizzas arrived quite quickly.
The presentation of the large pizza was a bit happen-stance as the cheese was a bit sparse and not evenly distributed, the basil was just a few little leaves, and the pepperoni, which we paid $3 extra for, was sporadically placed. The sauce was a fresh, but not complicated sauce (although to be fair I prefer a sauce that is not sweet with a good garlic kick). Overall, the pizza tasted fine.
The special pizza was a bit larger than the the 9" size advertised and had a good amount of toppings. Again the presentation looked as if the topping had been not too carefully tossed on.
Generally speaking, the pizzas tasted fine although due partially to the thin crust(which did taste nice) we did not leave the restaurant as full as we expected. Typically, when we go out for pizza, we expect to share a large and be quite full. In this instance, we shared a large and a small. Considering that we spent $37 on pizza, we thought that Hot Rocks was a bit on the expensive side. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Hot Rock is a very consistent pizza place in Nelson. The pizzas are yummy, the toppings are generous and very reasonably priced.
The pizza bread is also great and I can recommend the ribs. Takeout is also excellent.
Service is top notch and they are very accurate when estimating times for takeout. There is a nice wee bar if you are waiting for takeout with a good selection of local wines and beers.
Would cheerfully recommend. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook« There are reviews older than 18 months, click here to show them » Add your review to Hot Rock Gourmet Pizza Pasta Bar2,615 views
