Altura was not so busy as it usually is on a Sunday lunchtime but nevertheless it was a lot busier than restaurants nearby. I ordered roast rump of lamb with minted baby potatoes wilted spinach in a rosemary, smoked garlic and red wine reduction. The lamy came medium rare which is what I asked for and was delicious. Imagine my surprise when my wife asked me where my baby potatoes were. I had been served mashed and enjoyed it!! I decided not to mark the meal down for the 'mistake' as it had been vey nice. Nor did I complain to anyone. My wife ordered the 'grilled' fish of the day. This turned out to be King fish with mash potatoes, green beans with salsa verde. It turned out not to be a great choice as the fish wasn't that big and she thought the sauce was too spicy but she ate it anyway. The waiter had been polite and very attentive and both presentations were really good.

Had our first real disappointing meal here but once again the restaurant was rather busy. Parts of the pancakes were hard and could not get a fork into, mushrooms were hard and tasteless (tinned?) and bacon greasy. Staff were as friendly as ever but we spotted a man who part owns another restaurant in the area so it looks as if there is another that has changed hands.

Hi Mike. I went there this week for lunch and it was as good as ever. If as I suspect you are talking about the chap who used to work at the one next to the library, he was only an employee and not a part owner.

PS: should have said, had the Tuna special of the day and it was perfectly cooked with a great salsa

Thanks Ron, Yes that will be the man. We have seen him several times at the other place and he was in charge. Wonder if he has left or is now 'day'lighting'!

No worries, He was just the Asst Manager. I was At the other one today with 34 others for a birthday lunch and as usual great food and service. Hard to drink at lunch
time but Hey...still going....I think a cheap chinese takeway now is in order. Perhaps we should start an Albany takeaway forum

Just thought to clear some of the things mentioned here for our readers. But first thing first: my apologies to you Mike since you didn’t enjoyed your experience as much as we hoped, but I promise that your next one will be much better.
Yes you are right you have seen me at the other restaurant in Albany but I was the general manager not the owner. I am now day lighting as you put it and it’s nice to have the nights off for a change. Looking forward to seeing you

Altura is one of the better cafes in the Rosedale area - the coffee is always good and the food available for brunch/lunch is varied and reasonably priced. When busy it can have a nice atmosphere with lots of families and it's child friendly.

We came here on a reconaissance mission last weekend to see how a functioning coffee house works. 2 coffees 2 cakes nothing extreme. He requested a chocolate something cake and I wanted a brownie. I wanted a brownie that was untill I spotted someones hair. Suspiciously like a a private hair. Who's been baking naked?
I told the waiter discreetly because I'm not a bad person I wouldnt want anyone to know would I? She discreetly picked up the hair with the tongs and placed the offending piece back in the cabinet...again with the tongs. Good call you don't want someone elses hand touching your brownie do you? I settled for Banana cake with cream cheese icing. I like cream cheese with anything so I'm happy enough. Coffee was a little on the small side of small I never finish mine anyway so wasn't a problem for me.
Mission Completed.

After some disappointing brunches during recent times in some of the 'alleged' up-market restaurants we decided to go back to Altura where we knew the meal would be good. My wife had buttermilk hot cakes with bacon, poached fruit with 100% canadian maple syrup. The hot cakes weren't too thick and the meal was excellent. I had a big breakfast consisting of nice crispy bacon, fried eggs, 2 slices of 5 grain toast, 2 halves of a large fried tomato, mushrooms, two large hashbrowns and 2 small breakfast size sausages. Another excellent meal which I couldn't finish. The patronage of a lot of restaurants/cafes on the North Shore is down in numbers on the past and some are closed. This would be due to the recession but it was plain to see that those who served good meals and service, like the Altura, were well patronised.

Altura is just about the best place on the Shore for afternoon tea/coffee. They serve excellent coffee that is hard to beat anywhere in Auckland. Despite the time of day their variety of muffins, scones and cakes are always fresh. Their decor is typical of a place that is proud of its many makes of coffee and, if you don't want to (or unable to), take your coffee 'al fresco' there is plenty of indoor seating. A highly recommended Cafe to just pop in and eat. We've lunched there too but that is for another review.
