Tatler was just right for a light lunch on a winter's day and we enjoyed the ambience that accompanied the $10 lunches and $5 wines. I enjoyed the Seafood Chowder - and if it's not right - I certainly will know shortly after - but no side effects there. He enjoyed the Chicken Wrap and we both enjoyed a good local wine at just $5.00 a glass. It was certainly nice to enjoy a light lunch for $15 each at Tatler rather than spend the same at that Scottish Restaurant down the road. We reserved a table by the fire and it was a really romantic setting with personal service by a waiter who was obviously a professional. He really knew his wines, not just local but the French ones too, talking us into a French rose that we really enjoyed.
Food was really great, well lamb racks and beef fillet always tempt us but the preparation and presentation were top notch.
Really had a great time and look forward to visiting again. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Met friends here for lunch - can't deny it was the $10 special that brought us in. There were a few different options for $10 and I chose the chicken wrap which I was happy with. My friends liked their salmon salad and seafood chowder.
For $10 you wouldn't really expect much but we were pleasantly surprised. Good atmosphere, lots of happy locals enjoying lunch away from their desks at a nice restaurant without having to remortgage their houses to afford it. Although, looking at the main menu there were definitely pricey options there for those who wanted them.
If you order the $10 special you also get a wine for $5 so for $15 each, we were pretty pleased with our girls' lunch out. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Having read the responses to the previous two reviews, I am concerned that any negative comments I make will be fired back in my face. I was of the belief that dineout was about letting other people know about their own personal experiences. I've dined at Tatler on quite a few occasions, and have never found anything that really 'wowed' me. The food isn't great, but neither is it bad, their lunch special is hit and miss, sometimes great and sometimes not so great, (well based upon my two experiences). But having read Tatlers comments below I won't be coming back, if that's how they treat people who have done what dineout is supposed to do, and that's the reaction, imagine if I had actually complained about the length of time my meal took, or the fact that my meal was over-cooked, or that it took their staff about 15 minutes to clear obviously finished plates. Think I will give this one a miss from now on. Review Feedback by: ChefDeluxe (14) 13th Apr 2010 Yes the current owners of Tatler are totaly un-professional and really have no idea how to run a restaurant. Thier responses are face redining embarassing and completely unnecessary. I commend you on pointing this out and you have many excellent dining options in Queenstown, which i am sure you will make the most of.Login to vote x0 x1 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

went there for a christmas lunch with a large group. Their upstairs room is terrible for this type of function. Everyone was shouting to be heard accross the tables and no one could hear anyone. The food description sounded great but a steak & cashew salad should have more than 3 cashews (my friend had 2) and the miniscule 2 pieces of steak had fat on them (also my friends). It was on a bed of lettuce (just like in the bags at the supermarket) and vey little dressing so was tasteless. Everyone I spoke to was so disappointed and vowed never to go back as we all felt ripped off. Has to be one of the worst meals I have had and I have travelled all over the world. Funnnily we had been there for dinner a couple of weeks before and the meal was quite good. The lunch experience negated everything else though. Response from Tatler Restaurant Thank you for reviewing Tatler - all feedback is appreciated, whether positive or negative, as commentary helps us monitor our restaurant and front of house systems.
We are sorry that you did not appreciate the efforts of your lunch organiser to arrange an affordable lunch for a large group of women - $10 pp menu and $5 per glass of bubbly.
Being an historic restaurant constructed in 1863 with the original wood interior, Tatler's accoustics are best suited to intimate dining. 25 laughing females lubricated by several hours of drinking do indeed get loud and we are sorry you didn't enjoy yourself as much as the other attendees clearly did, judging by the chatter and laughter the whole restaurant experienced that day.
We hope you will return to Tatler in the future. Perhaps next time you will judge the restaurant fairly and not on the basis of a $10 group lunch where the food was incidental anyway.Review Feedback by: fishingsmylove (13) 1st Sep 2010 just a point >>>>> it was on a bed of lettuce "just like in the bags at the supermarket"
is there a different lettuce brand that most of have never heard of ? why would this be any different to a supermarket brand ? is it the way its pried apart ?

Very disappointed with the dining experience at Tatler's.
We had seen that Tatler's offered an 'early bird' dining special of $19.50 for mains. We booked by phone and indicated we were interested in the 'early bird' special. At the restaurant we were given their full menu and ordered an entree and two mains. The garlic bread we felt was subtandard as the butter was foamy and was lacking in garlic. The mains, a rack of lamb and venison, we believe to be half the size of the last time we had dined at Tatler's. We figured this must have been because of the 'early bird' special and felt this to be an under-handed tactic.
At the completion of the meal we were shocked to discover that the mains we ordered were full price ($34.00 for the lamb and $32.00 for the venison) and that there was a specific alternative early bird menu!
We explained to the restaurant manager Piere that we were dining because of the 'early bird' special and that the waiter should have directed us to the alternative menu. Piere did not offer to reduce the cost of the mains or offer any consolation. We found his customer service to be very unsatisfactory and we left wishing we had never dined there.
We feel that we paid full price for half sized average meals and we will not be dining there again. Tatler's have lost the custom of some regular and local diners. Response from Tatler Restaurant Thank you for submitting a review about your so-called experience at Tatler. We appreciate all feedback and our chefs and front of house team have been advised of your comments.
As you have chosen not to contact us directly or to reveal your name or the date of your dining experience we can't be sure what time you were seated, or on what day, and given your inaccurate comments, we can't be sure you actually dined with us at all.
Added to which, you have created a DineOut identity with no other reviews to your name, seemingly just to bad-mouth Tatler, so please forgive us for doubting the veracity of your review.
Other readers may like to note that Tatler provides a unique magazine-style menu to customers. This highly-acclaimed 40 page publication features all of our food and beverage options as well as articles on Queenstown, New Zealand's wine industry, tourist activities and other items of interest overseas and local visitors customers.
When diners are seated, our staff point out the pages relevant to the indicated requirements and the time of day. When guests are seated towards the end of the Early Bird period (which is widely publicised as being 5-6.30pm), staff show them the regular dinner menu.
The dinner menu is a double-page spread but diners need only turn the page, refer to the table of contents or look at the in-house blackboards to see that the Early Bird menu is quite separate to the dinner menu.
Regarding your comments about the actual meals, if you have ever grilled buttered bread you will know the butter foams when it is fresh. Garlic is a subjective flavour - heavy use of raw garlic can be too insense for some palates so our chefs are cautious with its use on garlic bread.
Our lamb rack and venison dishes are considerably less expensive now than two years ago, despite increased supplier pricing. This hardly represents "full price for half sized average meals" and if you actually were the "regular, local diners" you describe yourselves as, you'd have known this.
We hope you will come to Tatler in the future; if so, we look forward to a balanced review based on fact.Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

We were attracted by the magazines we saw outside, seems a cool way to present a restaurant menu and the photos of the dishes looked yum so we grabbed a table outside since it was a warm night. Watching the Earnslaw come through Queenstown Bay was a treat for our out of town friends.
We couldn't decide what to have for entrees so ended up sharing five different starters. My favourite was the chicken pate with the raw tuna ceviche a close second.
I would have ordered the tuna steak for a main but twice in one meal seemed a bit much so I settled for the beef fillet. This was interesting in that it was poached but what a surprise - really tender and also tasty, much easier to eat than a grilled steak. My parter raved about his twice-cooked pork belly but wouldn't share so I'll have to order that next time.
My frangelico tart was the perfect dessert - light and sublimely flavoured. The chocolate fondant (which I managed to get a taste of) was fabulous and I nearly had dessert envy - again, that's on my list next time. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Choose both a chicken and a salmon main from the early bird menu, which at $22.50 each isn’t a whole lot cheaper than their full menu. Both dishes were nice, but someone needed to tell us we really needed to order extra vegetable or sides with these.
Left not wanting dessert, but still a little hungry. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

We had a late breakfast here on a Saturday morning. We both had a cooked breakfast which was well cooked and tasted good, was well presented and we were served by a pleasant waitress. The cafe is in a central location and had a good atmosphere. Couldn't ask for much more really! Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Called in here for Brunch on Sunday morning. I think they must have gone to Invercargill for the sausages and bacon as it took 40 mins from the time we ordered till we got out meals and there wasn't even a dozen people in the whole place. We had well finished our coffee's by the time our brunch arrived. As for there "homemade hashbrowns" yuck I couldn't eat them I don't know what was in them but leave them alone, hashbrowns are just potato - don't spoil something that shouldn't be fancified. Price was reasonalble but serving wasn't that big for a brunch. We were asked what we thought as we walked out the door by people standing outside looking at the menu - I suggested they try the place down the road as this wasn't the best.
