Really great local restaurant. Really good food (used to be awesome but now just really good). Pizzas are the best I've had in years still (they are awesome!). Great for families and kids (earlier in the evening).

A group of us went to Sal Rose for a work dinner. It was recommended by the Aucklanders in the team as it was close by with easy parking. We were seated near the rear of the restaurant which was pleasant (although very dim). Starters of breads and dips came promptly and were, well, breads and dips - they filled a gap. The mains came next (obviously) but the seventh member of our group did not receive hers until we had all just about finished. Upon enquiring, the waitress said the delayed dish had been dropped on the floor. When it did finally arrive it had clearly been scraped off the floor and nuked (well, that was my fellow diners opinion). There was general satisfaction from the group, although I was not super impressed. The lemon and crab risotto was rather average (the BF makes a spectacular risotto at home, so maybe I'm spoiled). There was no discernable lemon flavour in the dish and the crab and rice was stodgy and gluggy.
We shared 2 dessert plates and my colleague whose meal was delayed was offered a complimentary dessert, which was appreciated. The toilets themselves were fairly average but I rated 7 as you got an Italian lesson while you used the facilities. Overall an enjoyable evening, but this was mainly due to the company.

Partner had been for a party here christmas last year and said was great. went in and were surprised to find they were fully booked, hostess offered us a seat at a lean-to while we waited for a table, so we waited. She said a seat would be round 20. All though she was busy she made sure she stopped by and let us know how far away our seats were, gave us water and talked to us about the wines, suggesting a great pinotgrigo for my partner, which she ended up drinking all night. waited a bit longer than 20, but didn’t mind as were kept in loop. Dinner was great; portions were very big, if we’d known we wouldn’t have ordered so much. Waitress was busy, but friendly and attentive; hostess brought some drinks over and checked we were happy. Dessert, partner had lemon tart (glaze bit burnt) and I had great tiramesu, but very rich. Bill was reasonable. will return, but will book.

My husband and I went to Sal Rose for our anniversary Nov 09; we had been there before, always found it to be good in the past. The wait staff this night were very young, very inattentive, really didn't care to be honest. We basically ate and left very quickly. What we had hoped to be a special night just wasn't at Sal Rose. Since John P sold the place it really seems to have gone downhill.

I've lived in Mt Albert for 12 years or so - and it's great to have a local restaurant serving food that is not Asian. Nothing wrong with Asian, but variety is good!
We've been to Sal Rose several times and have generally enjoyed it. For a suburban restaurant, prices are a little on the high side (especially for alcohol), but the food and service is generally very sound, we've found.
BUT one major problem: they never heat their plates (well, not in our experience anyway). The result - food can be just-warm (and sometimes barely warm) by the time it reaches your table. This is not good enough, Sal Rose - heat those plates and serve hot food.

I went there on a date a few months ago, the service was great and the food was amazing. The italian wine - even tho they didnt have a great range for an italian restaurant. I found it quite expensive for that area of town though but good.

I'm not quite sure what it is about the hit and miss with this place, but a few nights ago I went back with quite a crowd and the service was excellent (even with very demanding patrons), and the food just perfect. I am tempted to go back, yet the lingering memory of the pumpkin ravioli swimming in oil somehow tugs at my sleeve.

Dinner with a friend on a wet Wednesday night. We didn't have a booking but, there were plenty of tables available. We were seated in conservatory-like area which was a bit cold but, our waitress turned the gas heater on for us and we quickly warmed up. I have to mention our waitress Petrina as she was an almost perfect hostess as she was friendly and attentive without being overbearing or fake. She made the dinner turn from a good experience into a great experience. I ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana which came with a side of spaghetti. Very delicious, full of rich tomato flavours, plenty of cheese and extremely filling. My friend ordered the special "Angus Steak" which she requested fries instead of the potato fingerlings and the chef was most obliging. My friend eats a lot of steaks and she says that this was the most moist and tastey steak she has ever had. We also ordered a beer and a glass of wine so our bill came to about $66. We were too stuffed to fit in any dessert. I will definitely go back to Sal Rose the next time I want to eat Italiano.

Went there with a girlfriend. Waitperson was lovely and attentive, without being overbearing. We had pesto/garlic oil bread to start, which was very nice. We both then had calamari as an entree (bit oily) but a good quantity of squid. I then had another entree instead of a main - grilled field mushrooms on a polenta base. Was good, but only two little wee mushrooms - not much better than the old 50c piece. Friend had cabonara pasta which she said the sauce was thin and not much of it. I had a taste - tasted nice, but she was right - not enough creamy sauce. Had lemon tart to dessert which was very tart (which I like) but only about a teaspoon of cream on the side - more would have been preferable. All in all, a good night out, but they could improve a little with the presentation side of things.

Let me start by saying that I have been to Sal Rose quite a few times over the last few years. I use to recommend this place to everyone. However over the last 2 times I had dinner both the service and the meals were quite bad. The last straw was two weeks ago when my pumpkin ravioli (which I used to dream about as the first time I had it it was beautiful) was sub standard and swimming in a sea of butter and oil on my plate. My dinner companions did not enjoy their meals, especially one who ordered the vegetarian lasagna which when delivered contained meat - and that's just not good enough. The waiter assigned to our table forgot about 1/3 of the things we asked for and should have been better trained on interacting with customers. Very disappointing for a place I used to adore.

This was our first visit, and it happened to be my in-law's 40th wedding anniversary. Our group consisted of 7 adults and 2 toddlers. We ordered heaps and everyone was delighted with their meals, and needless to say, there was a lot left over as we didn't realise that their servings were huge. For entrees, we had mussels, bread, calamari and 2 pizzas. For mains, marsala chicken, chicken parmesana, seafood stew, steak and fish of the day were ordered. Everyone raved on about their food - delicious and huge quantities. We also ordered a bottel of wine. No desserts for us. We could barely move by the end of the meal. Sal Rose does provides kids' menus, but we figured that the kids could eat off our plates as well. The kids were also given some crayons and a picture to colour, which kept them busy when they weren't busy gobbling down the bread, which I have to say was delicious! The service here was pretty good as well - attentive and friendly. My in-laws also received 2 complimentary glasses of white wine because it was their anniversary, and they were estatic. Our only grouch was that we were seated next to an outdoor heater, which was way too hot for our liking. 1 of us actually left the restaurant with a "heat-induced" headache. Other than that, we will definitely be back for a 2nd round of delicious and very affordable italian food.

The restaurant was busy but not overcrowded for a Friday night. Good ambiance although we were in the side room it would be better to be seated in the main room if possible (we only booked 30 minutes prior to arriving). Service friendly and efficient.
The date and I shared an excellent Anti-Pasto plate, plenty for 2 people with toasted bread, calamari, artichoke hearts, marinated olives, peppers and sun-dried tomatoes as well as pesto and frittata. The date followed this up by a starter sized (but plenty big enough) gnocchi in blue cheese sauce, which was very rich. I had the osso bucco - melty oxtail, slowly braised in a tomato sauce it was to die for, nicely complemented by fried polenta and some green beans. We washed this down with a carafe of house red which was ok value at $24. I like the fact that there was a range of wines available by the 1/2l - a good size for a couple if one is driving. With coffee the bill came to $94 - good value and we will be back again.

Had heard good reports on Sal Rose-also seen The Kitchen Job.
So when our anniversay came around last Satrurday we went to Sal Rose.We had certain expectations.
Did Sal Rose meet these-you bet.
The service was top notch right from the Maitre'd to outr Waiter-who I think was Ben.
On arrival we found that a friend we hadn't seen for a while was there-we chatted for a while and there was no pressure for us to take a seat.
The service was just right in terms of giving us space and being attentive.
The food was excellent -my wife had the Chicken Caprisi and said it was unbeatable.
My eggplant Parmigiana was also very good. The flat bread to start and the Lemon tart were also excellent.
The wine list was good but here is my only little niggle-the wine was too cold-white wine does need to be chilled but this was too chilled.Once warmed a little it was an excellent Italian Pino Grigio. To be fair I mentioned this to both the Waiter and the Maitre'd and they were aware of the issue and hopefully it will be resolved.
It would also be nice if it was BYO as well. But you can't have everything.
Whilst we didn't have children with us,our friend we mentioned previously did and they all were enjoying themselves-there is an excellent Childrens menu all priced really reasonably.
The environment only gets an 8 because in our opinion the retaurant was a little dark-both in lighting and decor but nothing to get upset about-it is only our opinion after all.
To end the meal with our dessert we were given a complimentary liquour in honour of our anniversary. It was Lemoncillo and made on the premises-a really nice touch.
Would we go back-in a heartbeat. We loved Sal Rose.

Was there on a Sat night with a group of 6 people.
The service was good, but not friendly-ish. Would have been nice if staff can smile a bit...
The entree of bread and dips were pretty good. Liked the one with caramelised onion and tomato with mozzarella cheese.
But, one thing that I was not quite pleased was with the slow service of the mains.
Took approx. 30 minutes (after the entree and plates were cleared ) for the mains to arrive. Perhaps it was a busy night but would have been nicer if someone can inform us that the meals are a bit slow or something like that.
Other than that, I am quite pleased with everything else that's been going on there. Good atmosphere, good food.
