Comfortably & firmly plugged in to the former Municipal Electricity Department building on Manchester Street is Megawatt Urban Food Kitchen, a family owned and operated purveyer of an eclectic, internationally inspired menu of dishes. The overriding sense is of simple but honest and flavoursome food, delivered with a sprinkling of understated European garnish & genuine care.
Our group of 12 had gathered to mark the resignation of a valued manager of one of my favourite charities and we enjoyed quiet, efficient service, excellent food and a table arrangement that gave ample room between seats, smoothly facilitated good communication between guests & easily allowed for the many speeches to be heard.
Megawatt is licensed so you are able to take onboard your daily alcohol allowance over lunch, and I did so on this occasion.
The menu is peppered with dishes bearing the names of many countries and so you do feel the internationality of the restaurant from the moment you start considering your meal options. There’s German, French, Spanish, English, Swedish, Japanese, Jewish, American, Mexican & Kiwi along with some territorially indistinct cuisine so there is certainly more than a sufficiency of choice.
For me it was Smoked Salmon Gratin, “a galete of potato & smoked salmon cooked with cream capers & dill gratinated with Parmesan cheese & served with a green salad” ($18). This was a dish of good body with a hint of soul, simple yet satisfying and just enough in quantity and substance to stave off the prowling, howling beast of midday hunger.
However, just to make absolutely sure that I was going to last until dinner time, I warmed to the prospect of a rhubarb & strawberry tart, a fine decision as it turned out as this was a delightful, sweet, red, mouthfilling moment that capped off what was a very pleasant and memorable lunch.
Next time you’re buying meat at Verkerk’s, call in to Megawatt for a bite of lunch beforehand and make the trip to that part of the city all the better for it.
