On March 2001, Maharaja owners decided to skip the ditch and become a jem in the crown of the Garden City. The Restaurant, which is located on the corner of Main North Rd and Harewood rd is a great cosy Restaurant with traditional Indian surroundings which also has great cricket and rugby memorabilia, Maharaja has been a local favourite Indian since its opening and now has a very high local clientel, the staff here are a great bunch with a bubbly personality.

Owner and also head Chef Mr Vijay Biala is a award winning chef. His 25 years experience in Indian cooking speaks for itself. He noticed how New zealand was becoming very in to multicultural cuisine, and Indian cusine was right there. He brought his experience from India Singapore and also working in Australia, to finally setteling in Christchurch to give us locals the very best of Indian cusine.Maharaja also has great selection of their top of the range wine and beers and Indian whisky & Rum.

The Restaurant specilises in North Indian cusine so you will find Maharaja more like traditional Punjabi style cusine which is known for its Authentic usage of spices and much loved food by Indians so rest assure you will be getting the same authentic Indian cusine, well now folks you have read a bit about Maharaja, so why not make Maharaja your favourite Indian today and guarnteed you will not be disappointed, Restaurant also offers a very good selction's of seafood dishes and desserts which are mouth watering so relax and take your time looking at Maharaja's menu and if in need Maharaja staff will be delighted to help you with any questions just call us or contact us through email.

Really enjoy the food here...especially the stuffed kulcha which is
to die for. I like the way the food is presented on warmers. The staff are very friendly and there is a good atmosphere. This would be one of our favourite Indian restaurants.

I was told by someone that this is the best Indian restaurant in Christchurch, so we tried it out. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't THE BEST.
The curries were quite nice, but the entree platter was a little on the bland side.
Service was good and very friendly.
I don't know if I'd come back because I know of a couple other Indian restaurants in town which I prefer over this one and which are also a lot cheaper.

I eat a lot of curries, and my Friday night curry is sometimes the highlight of my week! And this Friday bought us back to the Maharaja, it had been a very long time between visits, and I have no idea why, as I wish to proclaim this the best Indian experience in the city, possibly the island.
We arrived at 7.30 and there was our table for 4, the only unoccupied in the restaurant which was a great sign, we noted that there had been a fresh lick of paint and the cricket memorabilia had been removed from the walls, the place was looking smart.
The service from beginning to end was faultless. I ordered a lamb vindaloo, garlic naan and some lime pickle. Complimentary popodooms arrived with a refreshing minty dip.
Our meals arrived, and I must say, I love the use of the heaters to keep the curry piping hot. My vindaloo was brimming with spicy goodness, and I devoured my naan bread in a hurry, so had to have another one as I haven’t had such well cooked naan in forever, crispy on one said and buttery garlicky goodness on the other.
We sat back with our wine full, contented and already looking forward to our next maharaja experience.

My favourite indian restaurant in Christchurch. The service here is brilliant, the friendliest staff of any restaurant I've been to in Christchurch, and the food is amazing. The restaurant is kind of small and a little dated, but the food and service make up for it. Definitely try the Jeera Allo, it's the best I've tried anywhere.

Without a doubt the best Indian in Christchurch, my partner and I have dined here on a number of occasions and are yet to find any other Indian that compares. Service has always proved to be excellent and extra details like having information about the different spices / places in India / star signs under the tables provides an interesting addition to pre dinner conversation. Highly recommend on all accounts

Yum Yum. Just finished eating dinner here & it was excellent. We always get our takeaways here but haven't eaten in for ages. The quality of the food is the reason to come here. We had pompadom starter with choice of up to four chutneys/dips - tomato/ coriander & mango chutneys are particularly nice. Mains were butter chicken, lamb rogan josh & garlic naan. Rogan Josh was nicely spiced, Butter chicken good & tomatoey without being too rich, Naan crisp and garlicky. Service was a little slow tonight but maitre'd so friendly & warm so this counteracted the small wait for pompadoms. If you don't mind the fairly utilitarian interior of the restaurant this is a great place for dinner.
