As a regular out of town visitor to Auckland, Bouchon has become my new favorite. Its an unpretentious cafe with really good food and a nice relaxed ambience.
We were recommended this place by a friend who urged us to make the short drive to Kingsland to find out for ourselves.
The first time I ordered the cassoulet, and it was delicious. I wanted some extra bread to mop up the meaty gravy, it was bought promptly and without charge, brilliant.
Next visit I ordered the snapper, with salmon pate, mash, mushrooms and a few vegetables. The fish was very fresh and good value. For dessert a crepe filled with rhubarb, a great combination.
One of things I really like about Bouchon is that its BYO, seemingly a rare type of restaurant nowadays. Fortunately there is a great bottleshop a few doors down, making this a very affordable night out.
I have found the service on both occasions to be charming, attentive and prompt. What more can you ask for? Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Being local to the area, I had looked in on this place in the past and thought it looked really nice, so we decided to visit it recently for Sunday brunch.
We we greeted as we arrived however it seemed that we had to seat ourselves. Fair enough. Unforunately for the next 10 minutes we were completely and utterly ignored. No water provided, no offer of a menu - nothing. Eventually, the young waitress (who seemed to be a little run off her feet) came to us with a menu.
Unfortunately we then had to wait at least another ten minutes to eventually place our order. I consider this pretty poor service, considering that there were 7 staff (yes seven!) on shift during this time: an older couple, a gent loitering around the coffee preparation area, a couple of kitchen staff, a bloke inbetween who seemed to be doing precisely nothing, and of course, the afore-mentioned waitress, who was friendly enough when she finally had a chance to attend to us.
We went for crepes, as it would seem that these are billed as the house speciality. When they eventually arrived, after what seemed like an another eternal wait (are crepes that difficult to prepare?) it was anti-climax, in keeping with the experience as a whole thus far. Whilst there was nothing technically wrong with them, they were no better than something I could have flung together at home with various shop-bought items.
It seems a shame that we had such a disappointing experience in this place, as it has the makings of something special: the decor is rustic and charming, and the food and wine menu reads as simple and effective. Unfortunately, it seems like it is being managed very poorly, and ultimately this drags the entire operation down.
I don't intend to revisit, and I certainly wouldn't recommend this establishment. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

I attended Bouchon with some girlfriends for a nice, fun night out. We were a small group and all of us agreed that the night was a success.
THe menu itself has a good variety of flavours and dishes and the specials board offers a great selection of affordable yet interesting options.
The meal portions were of a very decent size and the presentation was overall pretty good.
Some of us opted for the starters as opposed to the desserts and were not disappointed with any options.
Starters were not too filling but were very tasty and definitely left the taste buds wanting more.
The mains were all made to our specific requirements and again, were fantastic.
The owner and his staff are certainly eager to please with the only downfall being that one or 2 of the waiters were possibly new and were very shy, to the point of perhaps seeming a little awkward and getting the odd thing incorrect on delivery! But we all start somewhere!
Despite this, the atmosphere was great, the food equally as great and this would have to be a fave of anyone looking for a great meal leading to a great night in Kingsland

Last friday I went out to this fabulous restaurant with 14 others. I must say that through out the whole evening the services was extremely good. The decor of the place was great, especially out the back in which they have a garden enclosed relaxing environment. Seeing as I had a couple of friends from the states I was interested to their impression of the prices, and I must say that it will be hard to find such professionally made french quazeen of this standard; at such an affordable price. The meals are very reasonably priced, and the desserts to die for! The crew at Bouchons Creperie, and wine cafe supply a very high standard of customer service, and I without any hesitation would highly recommend this place. I was also taken back by the fact that they had no sur- charge on BYO wines, beer, and spirits. Over all I give this place 2 thumbs up, and recommend people to seriously try

Had crepes for lunch here a couple of years ago and vowed to come back for dinner, which we did last Saturday. There were just the two of us and it was a quiet night (11 out front, 10 out back) and we settled in at a table at the front to peruse our menu. After 5 mins, were asked for our order but explained we were in no hurry. However, the waiting staff came back four times over the next 10 mins. (Note: when people are ready to order, they close their menus, signifying they have made their decision) The french onion soup was hot, hearty and generous, and served with plenty of cheese-topped french bread. The cassoulet was delicious as was the chicken dish. We finished with the crepe suzette flambed at the table which was a lovely light end to our meal. The other diners' meals we saw, all looked very enticing. We took our own bottle of wine but next time (and there will be a next time) we'll try some wine by the glass from their all-French wine list.
Just a couple of things we wish to add. We loved the relaxed feel of the place and the decor but felt it needed a little something extra i.e. candles on the table (or the lighting turned down a bit) and some French music, or such, playing in the background for a bit more ambience Login to vote x1 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Very cool little restauarant in Kingsland. The staff were fantastic, very friendly and accommodating to our party of 12. It was no trouble for them to put up balloons in the outside area and they didn't seem to mind when I brought in a birthday cake too. The food was very good - there are lots of things on the menu I would love to go back and try! The BYO factor is awesome, not only wine but beer too. We will def be back! Review Feedback by: Nostalgie (4) 2nd May 2010 Amckay, next time you can express your gratefulness and praise to this indeed good restaurant by purchasing wine and beer and cake at the premise. Otherwise venues like this might will not survive for you to come back next time. ThanksReview Feedback by: Jessica Robb (48) 13th Aug 2010 If a venue doesn't want to provide BYO booze and cake they don't have to (well, legally they do with the booze, from memory, but they can charge whatever corkage they like). If a venue allows all this then who are you to say that this reviewer shouldn't take advantage of it? If the restaurant was struggling they would charge for BYO booze and cake. But they don't so they probably aren't stuggling, or realise that cheap BYO etc gets bums on seats which means more money for them!Login to vote x0 x3 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Bouchon is run by the most dedicated man in hospitality!
My friends as I go there a couple of time a week after work for a crepe and a gossip. The owner (I think) is always friendly, always happy to see us and never asks us to leave when we loose track of time and are there until 1am! I have also been there for lunch and the french onion soup was lovely, and they even made me bread without cheese grilled on top, since I can't eat cheese.
Last night we turned up and they were closed and cleaning up. We turned to walk away and the owner waved his arms in a "come in" way. So we went in and said never to walk away, if he is there he wil serve us (and also mentioned how lovely we are...but that is besides the point). We thought that went above and beyond any other restaurant we have been to and I will not hesitate to recommend Bouchon to everyone I know! I organised a hen's lunch at Bouchon for 24 people in the outside area and we had a great time. The space was really good for our large group as it was separate from the rest of the restaurant and therefore we didn't impact on other guests too much. I thought the standard of food was pretty good and the service was friendly and pretty good too. No dramas with people paying separately and the fact that it's BYO wine is awesome (and helps keep the oosts down). My only complaint would be that there was a delay in getting meals to some people, but it's probably impossible to expect them to be able to deliver all of the meals for such a large group at the same time. Overall, I'd definitely recommend Bouchon as somewhere with a bit of character to go to for a nice meal. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

The night started out a bit rough, took 15 minutes to get drink orders in and it wasn't a particularly busy night. Plus we were both pretty hungry and ready to get things underway...
Our waiter apologized profusely for the delay as they were short a member of the waitstaff which made me think we might have to wait but the food would still be good.
Nope! We waited almost an hour for our food to arrive which consisted of a cold galette served with a quarter of a brown avocado, french onion soup that tasted like mud and pepper, a very small bowl of ratatouille, and from what my partner said a pretty good bowl of king prawns but misadvertised as risotto which it wasn't.
I don't mind paying money for good food but this was decidedly below average and not that cheap. $84 for a couple of mains, entrees, and a glass of champagne.
Not coming back, played and dismayed.... Login to vote x6 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Have been to Bouchon on a number of occassions and each time the service has been exceptional, the staff are friendly and always have a smile on their face and know the menu well.
The crepes are just the best and my children can't get enough of them, the rest of the food is always good and I can't wait to experience Bouchon again. Login to vote x0 x3 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

My Husband and I have been to Bouchon several times now. Each time we go with a different group. Everyone who we have taken to Bouchon have really enjoyed themselves. I highly recommend the entree's.
Garlic bread with mushrooms and cheese were very popular with our guests. We try different things from the menu and as yet have not been disappointed.
They Manager told us to get some wine from the shop up the street as it would save us money, I thought this was great. I prefer to sit in the conservary out the back as it has atmosphere.
I highly reccommend this Restaurant to all my friends, family and to you. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

11 of us went to experience French Crepes. The staff were attentive. The food was presented well and very good. My husband had fillet steak which he said compared with well with mine (the best!) although it was a bit on the cool side. I had crepes for mains and dessert which I really enjoyed. The rhubarb and cream crepes were superb. We liked the BYO and corkage was reasonable. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and several of our friends wanted to return to try other dishes. I went with a group of women for our end of year get together. We had a large table in the garden (11 of us), this area was perfect since we are a pretty noisy bunch. We arrived at 11.30 and were there until 4.00pm. Lunch was very reasonable, Bouchon is BYO which helped us save our pennies. The staff were very helpful and attentive. What a dissapointment- Kingsland on a Friday evening, and looking to try somewhere new, we gave Bouchon a shot, as the menu sounded very authentically French. Hoping to rekindle great memories of holidays in France, we chose Bouchon.
Service was warm and friendly to begin with, but seemed to slip once we enquired about BYO- they seemed happy enough for us to go an get some wine from the bottle shop a couple of doors down- but were less so in terms of actually providing a corkscrew to open it for us. The bottle sat on our table for quite some time, and then when we finally got the waiters attention to have it opened, he took it away to the bar, where it sat for another few minutes before we got a drink!
On to the food- I ordered Cassoulet, but what arrived bore very little resemblance to any cassoulet i have had. Served in a Soup bowl, with a very small amount of duck, and very average sausages. the whole thing was only lukewarm, and the beans were very undercooked. My partner ordered the Pork Belly- and it seemed that presentation had got in the way of taste, as the plate looked great, but all the elements did not come together. Undercooked to the point of being inedible pumpkin slices sat under the meat, which was mainly fat- very little belly pork actually on the plate.
Underwhelming.
Prices seemed reasonable- but even at these prices i would expect much more. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

On a recent visit to NZ I was taken to Bouchon for lunch. Not knowing what to expect, as I had never sampled French cuisine before, I was pleasantly surprised with excellent taste and value of my meal. The Ratatouille Galette was exceptional - light yet fulfilling. The pleasant atmosphere and service made my dining experience a thoroughly enjoyable one. I met with Vinod (the owner) in passing one night and arranged to have a team dinner at Bouchon a few weeks later. There was 14 of us which made for an exceptional night. The staff and indeed Vinod were very welcoming and made our experience one to be remembered! (They actually rearranged the terrace to suit our numbers!) Personally I had the pork belly and it really was melt in your mouth... The BYO and mains prices made for a very inexpensive night out. If you are looking for a good place with good food, good service a good experience without the $$$ attached... this place is for you! I'll be recommending this place to my firends and I look forward to the next night out at Bouchon!
Thanks for a great night Vinod

My partner and I are from France, and we moved a couple of months ago to Auckland. We were dying to eat some good crêpes, as it is one of my favourite meal, and we read a great review about this restaurant in a tourist guide...
Well... I guess they haven't eaten there before writing down their review!!!
We arrived around 1.30pm, and the place was totally empty, not one single customer, the owner was looking at everybody who was passing by, and the worst of the worst of french music was being played very loudly (and I was ashamed to think that kiwis may think that this is what we do listen to in France!!!!)
We sat down, and ordered some cider and 2 basic egg/cheese/ham crêpes. You have a lot of possibilities with crêpes, but the basic one that most people eat in France is this one, it's a real classic. And wow, I think it was the worst one I had ever eaten:
-the ham was thick and greasy
-the cheese was terrible: not melted ('guess the crêpes were not cooked long enough) and very cheap, like the cheapest white cheddar you would find (very far from the good Gruyere which is supposed to be used!)
-the eggs: well 'guess they used the smallest eggs possible, and applied it on top of the crêpe (it's supposed to be inside, have they ever cooked any crepes before?)
Ok, the cider was good, ^-^
We were so disappointed that we haven't ever tried any dessert, and also I could not bear the music anymore...
I will NEVER put my feet there again, it's should not be called a creperie, it's should not be called a "french" restaurant! It's just an imitation, with no talent, and no taste... Login to vote x4 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Having been here with my 3 kids who adore crepes and Bouchon we thought we would meet friends there for dinner. Two new waiting staff - both French certainly added to the ambience and they did a good job. The merlot syrah we ordered was most palatable and we found out later they are now BYO. The bread & dips were delicious and no fuss was made when we asked for more bread.
My pork loin looked on the small size but was delicious and quite filling in the end. The other 3 had the chicken and all were complimentary of the taste and presentation.
The best thing about Bouchon is always the dessert crepes and tonight the rhubarb and cream crepe was just what was needed to finish the evening meal.
Reasonably priced and a pleasant dining experience my wife is about to test them with a table for 12. Lookin forward to BYO next time. Login to vote x0 x2 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

we used to come here all the time for great french food,
unfortunately the flavour of this restaurant has changed. our crepes were substandard, and arrived after a very long wait, our water glasses were dirty, service was slow (but our waiter was child friendly which was nice) on this, our last visit, the food was below average, there was no atmosphere, very lack lusture staff, no music, no sparky buzz as this was what bought us here with original owners, Wont be back. I wanted to experience a french gastronomic experience, hence coming from a French background. I must say that it was a worthwhile experience, the food was great and I felt very welcome. There was a great wine selection and the portions were of a good size! I must recommend the 'Duck' it was exceptional.
Only thing I struggled with is having an Indian owner. Although the head chef and waitress are French, the authentic french feel would have been lovely to have a french owner.

Oblivious to the recent reviews, my friends and I visited Bouchon for the first time a couple of months ago and were so impressed I have been back 4 times since. Personally I like the simplicity of the place, Bouchon lacks the pretentiousness that plagues so many restaurants. The meals are extremely good value particularly given their size (I recommend the fillet), the desert options are brilliant also. Great value, friendly service, Bouchon felt like a 'local' should. Was walking past and called in because my partner had a craving for crepes. I hadn't heard much about the place before I went it ... but now I realise, after my experienece and reading the reviews that this place could be used as a text book example of how NOT to run a restaurant. With all the other restaurants and cafes buzzing on a Sunday afternoon in Kingsland it did cross my mind why this place was deserted.... After getting back to the car after getting our (incredibly over priced) crepes as take away - my partner was dismayed to find the 'fresh' cream on his crepe absolutly STUNK. Im sorry, but we are in the year 2009... there are procedures in place to ensure nothing like this happens. I cannot believe the 'chef' could not smell this when he was preparing the crepe. The staff were averagely apologetic and I got our money back. Not even stepping within a 5 metre radius of this joint ever again. Login to vote x0 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

We have always loved a trip to Bouchon. We haven't been for a while and we were worried about the bad reviews. I am disappointed to say they are well deserved.
We arrived at 7:30 on a Saturday and were immediately worried with the empty restaurant. It soon became clear as to why. We were in a group of 7 someone had arrived before us and the wine was just being corked, a good start. Ten minutes or so go by and the waitress comes and asks for our orders. Small problem we have no menus.
We finally get our orders in. The entree of scallops wasn’t nice. They were strong smelling and only just eatable. To wash that down we had more wine but the problem was the waitress couldn’t pull the corks! Luckily we were able to take matters into our own hands and do it ourselves.
The mains start to arrive but the gap between meals is getting so long the first meals are getting cold so they try to start without us but there was a small hitch in the form of no cutlery. The steaks are mixed up and the medium get a rare (that was supposed to be medium rare) and the medium rare gets a very medium steak. The chicken was dry. The fish was ok but not a well balanced meal, snapper couscous and a piece of orange ended up being a bit to dry.
It turns out though that without realising it we just missed the highlight of the night. Deserts arrive and we go from bad to worse. The crème brulee should have been called scramble eggs with icing sugar, we had to send those back. One of the crepes was uneatable. The savour was the apple and calvados crepe nice but not memorable.
Just to top the evening off, after the deserts were served we didn’t see a single person until we begrudgingly paid the bill. The old adage sprung to mind as we were leaving “Can’t complain about the service there wasn’t any”. Login to vote x1 x0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

This is the first bad review I have written, but my recent experience at Bouchon was so horrible I just have to comment. The whole night was a complete disaster. We were dining with 10 people, but it was a quiet Monday night and I wouldn't have thought we would have thrown such a big spanner in the works as we did. The first challenge was getting drinks, and getting refills (this was a very hot night in mid February, about a month ago) so constantly having to ask for bottles of water was annoying. When we came to order, two of the mains were "sold out" - it would have been nice to know this when the menus were being handed out so that we didn't set our hearts on meals that were not available. However, this was early in the evening before we realised that the wait staff were, quite frankly, the worse-trained wait staff I've encountered in a restaurant in Auckland. There were strange things going on with the food. We ordered some "garlic bread" to nibble on but when it arrived it was a buckwheat crepe sliced into small wedges with a garlicy spread. Not really what we'd expected and not particularly tasty. Dinner was worse - firstly our orders seemed to be hopelessly mixed up. We ended up with 11 meals for 10 people, but at least three people ended up with meals they didn't order. We just couldn't be bothered waiting for them to be cooked and eating at different times so we took what we got. We paid for all 11 dishes in full - we didn't ask for any compensation and they certainly didn't offer. The food was, in a word, horrible. My fish of the day was not only the most over-cooked fish I've ever eaten, the flavour and texture was disgusting. I realised after a couple of bites that it was old. At first I thought they had strangely smoked it, but then my sister said her scotch fillet was smoked and I had some horrible image of cross-contamination as I re-read the menu and mine was definitely supposed to be fresh fish. Yuck!! I just couldn't eat it. A shame since I was starving and I hadn't eaten the gross "garlic bread" either. All of the meals were very, very average at best. The presentation was so basic it was embarrassing. The steak dishes had pale, barely cooked fries with them and a limp, basic salad. Very sub-standard. The service was pathetic. We got our meals but no cutlery. Our dirty dishes sat on our table for ages. We even started stacking them up into a couple of piles to make it obvious and easy for them, but they didn't seem to take the hint. We had to ask them to take our plates away after they had taken our dessert orders and were about to walk off again, clearly they thought we could have our dirty dishes on the table for the rest of the night. Once again, desserts came but no cutlery. They had had so long to make sure we had cutley before our desserts came out, and with an almost empty restaurant it was, by now, amost a game to us to see if they would anticipate this basic need for our next course. By now we were good at running after wait staff to get what we needed as they never seemed to check on the courtyard where we were sitting. I remembered a divine creme brulee from another time I had been here so was pinning all my hopes on that to rescue the evening. However, when it came it was dry and rubbery. Domestic cooks can do better than this. By now we couldn't wait to get out of there. We waited on the pavement outside for Dad to pay, and when he came outside he was shaking his head and smiling in bewilderment. He said the owner/maitre 'd was smiling and telling Dad what a lovely evening we had had. How nice the food was and how good the restaurant was. He didn't actually ask if we'd enjoyed our meals and evening - he TOLD us we had. Very strange. Dad couldn't be bothered saying anything - where would you start? Terrible food, terrible service, massive disappointment. I still have nightmares about that fish. That's it - I definitely won't be back. EVER!!!!!!
