This place to say the least was a terrible and pathetic experience for me after going with high expectations. Everything is well over priced. $5 for plain bread with a bit of herb on it microwaved.. please!! The main was something i could have done at at home and far from authentic as well as taking far too long to make, bland and no where near value for money not to mention it took over 45mins after the entrees to arrive and the place wasn't even busy. I also do not expect microwaved vegetables when i go to a restaurant, their suppose to be chefs not students cooking in a flat. This place left a bad taste in my mouth, the food was a let down, the service rubbish and to put it simply i would not go back if paid to or recommend it. Shame really.
If you want a strangely disappointing night out, go here otherwise steer clear. Oh yes you will also leave feeling rather hungry as well.

Well,
My experience of Cafe Munich is far different from what I have had in many restaurants in the past.
I took my niece along with a few friends and family and found the environment to be very comfortable and friendly. The waitress catered to our every need even tho the restaurant was quiet busy having a much larger group dining at the same time.
My Niece was giving a picture to color in along with some colored pencils which kept her company.
We waited approx 15mins for our Garlic Break and a further 15 for our mains which I thought was excellent and well time managed.
The food was fantastic and being the only Traditional German Cuisine restaurant in Wellington I think Cafe Munich has allot to answer for.
I disagree with the comment made with the garnish as every restaurant has there own ways as do every person with there opinion and this is all a review is one persons perception of an encounter they have had.
I would say that my overall experience of Cafe Munch was fantastic and I would certainly recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family.
Thank you Cafe Munich for the pleasurable experience we will be returning. Keep up the good work.

The glowing nature of this review (which is at odds with other reviews), together with its rather 'offended' references to the previous review's criticisms, make me suspicious that this review was written by somebody with connections to the restaurant.

Kate, everyone has different experiences and mine happened to be well catered for when I dined at Cafe Munich. I'm sorry you did not have such a pleasurable experience but I guess from the tone of your reply over my post I don't think I would want you dinning in my restaurant. Needless to say I and my family enjoyed our experience and find your negativity and assumptions quite directive. If you wish to complain or believe I have some form of connection with the restaurant be my guest and follow the correct procedure and go through the Dine Out channels.

Keith. You have rated Food 9 and Dessert 10. It would be useful for you to describe what you had. I have to say your review is glowing and if that was your experience so be it, but please describe the food etc that earned such high praise.

I stand by my remark - especially as a subsequent diner has since posted a less than glowing review. DineOut has seen my feedback and can act on it if they wish. (No further abuse please, Keith, and no need to get huffy - I was just giving an honest review.)

Mmmmmmm - no response from Keith23 as yet. This becomes curious and curiouser !.

Keith23 remains silent on his glowing review of this cafe. Frankly, I think readers would be entitled to take the review with a grain of salt !.Login to vote Yes, a great reviewx0This review should be deletedx1 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

Our experience of this restaurant was badly let down by the poor service. The waitress's last priority was taking our used plates away - she would busy herself behind the counter, tidying her supplies, clean away the plates from empty tables, you name it - but every time would leave us sitting there looking at our long-empty plates, until I finally cleared the plates away myself. This wouldn't have been so bad if it happened once, but exactly the same experience repeated itself with the dessert course. After sitting for ages, I took the plates off myself to the kitchen. Again, the waitress swooped with profuse apologies for the long wait, but just seemed clueless as to what a waiter's priorities should be. Overall we were not burdened with good service: we were not advised in advance of any dish or wine being unavailable that night - only when we actually ordered it. After dessert, we were not asked if we would like to order tea or coffee. The mains were okay, although my stuffed beef roulade seemed mysteriously short on stuffing: I could hardly perceive any at all! The others' schnitzels looked quite nice. The dessert - peach strudel (the cherry strudel, as we found out upon ordering it, being unavailable) was much nicer: light, attractive and delicious. However it has been many years since a twisted slice of orange was a fashionable garnish. Would I go back again to Cafe Munich? Possibly for dessert after a movie...and if I wasn't in a rush to be served.

Visited Cafe Munich on Christmas Eve for a birthday lunch wanting to try something new. There were nine of us including one child who was well looked after. The food took a little longer than we would have liked, but not one of us could fault it and all thought it was worth the wait. We had a lovely waitress who I was told was studying German and hoping to visit the country shorlty. She was extremely attentive and more than willing to have a good laugh with us. Although we seemed to be the only customers (apart from a table leaving as we arrived) there was definately no lack of atmosphere. I would highly recommend Cafe Munich to anyone wanting to try something new or different.

A new experience for my fiance and I as we haven't eaten alot of Bavarian food before. We were quite outnumbered as diners, as most seemed to be around 60years+, and the atmosphere was very slow and gentle. However the staff are very welcoming and polite, and we were impressed with the German male from Munich who proudly wore his laiderhosens.
There seemed to be a lot of spirits and beers to choose from, so a good place if you like your alcohol. Also there is an extensive list of schnitzels and dishes that come with 'egg noddles' (German style long egg strips) and dumplings. I found my strogonoff a bit strong, however I understand that's how it is eaten in Germany. The apple strudel however was delicious.
This was certainly a unique place to try, and although I may return, I wasn't particularly amazed by it either. Maybe its because most diners were older and gentler, and the decor, although proudly German, was a wee bit tacky.

The meals were fairly tastless and too small in my opinion. I left hungry. The dessert was advertised as parfait, however it was just a slab of ice cream with some fruit. Have the owners not seen Shrek? Parfait has layers. And is delicious. This parfait was neither. The redeeming feature was our waitress, Claudia, who was just gorgeous and was very sweet. She was very happy to help us out, recommending her favourite dishes.

We went to Café Munich last night with low expectations (having read through some dineout reviews) and were astounded to find that our expectations were too high. We were part of a large group (18 people), so did expect to have some slight glitches. A significant number of us have German ancestry and/or have been to Germany so weren’t unfamiliar with the type of food. The environment was well decorated with German memorabilia, although there was a lack of music playing.
The service was the biggest disappointment. The wait staff had no idea what the vast majority of the dishes were (both on the menu or when bringing them to the table). They were also totally unfamiliar with the small wine list, and even brought a bottle of wine to the table with a cork in it and only went and opened it for us when prompted.
Our entrees would have taken about one hour to arrive after ordering them, and upon completion of our entrees it would have been at least another hour until the main courses came out. We were at that point told that a Chicken Schnitzel must have been ordered instead of a Veal Schnitzel (there was no chance that the wait staff were wrong, in their opinion) and given the strong impression that somebody must now have the (now cold) Chicken Schnitzel instead.
In general the meats that came out were good (although the Venison ragout was apparently quite salty), but the vegetables (other than the german “vegetables”), salad and spaetzle were disappointing; the corn in particular had an off flavour to it! My Sauerbraten (braised beef) was quite good, and those having the various Schnitzels seemed to enjoy them.
There was a lack of attention to detail throughout the evening, from having no idea who ordered what (there was a constant question of “who ordered xyz?”), to leaving our empty beer and wine glasses on the table for the whole evening. There was also no water to be found to fill up the empty water glasses on our table.
18 people unlikely to return.
