Nelson's quayside would not be complete without its own Waterfront Restaurant. Located at 341 Wakefield Quay, between Rocks Road and the Port of Nelson, its warm, friendly atmosphere makes the Waterfront an ideal place for family and friends to take in the big flavours that are part of the Nelson Tasman lifestyle.

Enjoy the fresh taste of Nelson as you look across sparkling Tasman Bay

The stunning panorama of Tasman Bay is the perfect backdrop for enjoying lunch, dinner or weekend brunch from the upstairs dining room. Relax and take in the live tapestry of sailing boats, ships and the occasional dolphin, whilst locals and visitors alike enjoy the sunshine from along the sea wall. Winter, summer, whichever the season, the scenery changes every day. Whether you are here for lunch, dinner or just a coffee, there is always something to see.

Kiwi Fusion cooking from Nelson's freshest flavours and ingredients

Experience the best the region has to offer in fresh produce, with the Waterfront’s menu of seafood, game and other tasty dishes, a fusion of French and Asian cooking styles that will delight your taste buds. View our brunch, lunch and dinner menus to see our range of delicious seasonal dishes, which include fresh local fish, scallops, crayfish, mussels, venison, duck, quail, Angus Pure Beef and an assortment of vegetarian dishes to delight any palate.

Was up in Nelson for business and combined with a short holiday break with family. Fortunate to eat at a number of restuarants in the region. THIS IS DEFINITELY ONE NOT TO GO TO!!!
Had been to the Waterfront Cafe about two years ago and had a lovely meal so was really keen to go back again this time - Saturday, 9th January 2010. Even raved to family members how much I was looking forward to taking them there for a meal - was totally embarassed to have recommended it!
We dined early at the 6 o'clock "sitting" (they generally have two "sittings" either 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. onwards) at a table up stairs with a lovely view out over the water. (They have a bar and casual dining area downstairs).
The view was as good as it got! We decided to skip entrees and go straight to the seafood platter for two, while another member of our group had the fish of the day (which had changed to salmon because they didn't have any "fish of the day"). The chowder was served in two small shot glasses and pacific oysters (x6)were served first (like an entree) then followed by the platter. The oysters were natural so no problem there, the chowder was somewhat tasteless and salty.
The platter was a disgrace and a rip off! It was a platter for two people but had one small salmon fillet about the size of the palm of your hand, half a hard boiled egg (one wonders what they did with the other half, maybe chef got hungry when platting the meals!), three small fired/battered peices of fish (type of fish unknown by the waiting staff), eight steamed mussels of the chewy variety (yes, I know that mussels can be a bit on the firm side but these were like "reidrubber"), six grilled prawns (been dried out by over cooking) and one only finger bowl. The other fish meal (main) was declared OK but "swam" in butter.
Needless to say we did complain to the Manager who offered us ONE complimentary dessert if we'd like it. (And was unable to explain just how two of us were to split up the food). We did not take up this offer, thought it better to cut our losses and go (as the elderly couple next to us chewed their way thru' an apple and rubarb crumble and "chased" the ice cream round the plate with a fork - they had to ask for spoons. As an aside, these people had already endured having their entrees arrive to the table a couple of minutes after their mains).
Overall the service level was poor, ill infomred and amateurish.
Would recommend that you avoid this restaurant....

Dined for the first time while visiting Nelson.
We shared the seafood platter for two and it was quite good.
We had the apple tart for dessert and that was also very good.
We would definitely go back!

The Waterfront doesn't have an outdoor area or terrace so I wonder if it was actually The Boatshed you ate at ?? Sorry to be picky but they are very different places, albeit pretty much straight across from each other on Wakefield QuayLogin to vote Yes, a great reviewx0This review should be deletedx0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook
