Our group of 11 dined here for our work dinner. I was really impressed with the quality of the food. I ordered the fillet steak - medium and it was perfectly cooked. The portion size was very generous as well. The waitress told me that because I wasn't ordering potatoes I could have extra veges which I thought was very nice. I had the duck as an entree and it was cooked to perfection. It fell of the bone and the salad with it was so tasty. I will definately return to visit. Great value for money.

Once again, I am so dissapointed in the service of another Christchurch restaurant, we dined here on Saturday night (24th July) it was a work do situation, so there was money to be spent, but like so many occasions, the waitresses didn't keep the alcohol coming in fact many times we went to the bar ourselves, and when we did manage to get their attention they were very slow at coming back. But on the flipside the food was excellent, and everyone raved over it.

Have been to Mu a few times now and have enjoyed it a lot!
I tried the $75 250gm Wagyu Rib Eye (New Zealand Wagyu breed beef, grass raised, grade 5 marbling) and it was great! Served with Bearnaise (fairly minimal amount) and medley of roasted vegetables, I really enjoyed my meal!
Partner ordered a special they had on the day, a 350gm ribeye I think it was and he also really enjoyed his dish.
For dessert we shared an Apple Tarte Tatin (caramelised apples, lemon zest & cinnamon on puff pastry with anglaise & hokey pokey caramel ice cream) and it was just to-die-for!
Looking forward to going back again soon!

I was looking forward to returning to Mu for a good steak. And a good steak was had indeed! I started with some wines (not a bad selection) and a duck salad which was simple, but good. I ordered a rare steak as a good steak shouldn't be cooked to death before consumption, and a steak house should be able to produce a rare steak on request. And they did. It was perfectly cooked, but not the best quality I have ever had, but was still devoured completely and with a smile. Better quality was available on request, and wagyu is there too, although I can't bring myself to spend $75-100 for a steak :(
I had a cheesecake for dessert and it wasn't a slice from a pie, but a hand-made delicacy with a berry coulis and choc icecream as well. Very nice indeed.
With a half decent coffee, the night was a success. If I was looking for a good steak, done well, I'd surely head back to Mu.

Dined at MU on Monday 31 May. Arrived relatively early and was seated promptly. By the time we left the place was full.
Staff were helpful though I almost felt once they realised we weren't going to be big spenders that they weren't overly interested.
We had the rib-eye and the entree of sesamed beef strips for our mains. Both were very nice. Steak cooked perfectly. And I'm not a big steak eater, so for me to say it was good - it was.
Desserts were really yummy - tiramasu and apple tart were appreciated.
Probably relatively pricey for a "steak place" but as we were on holiday it was a special treat.

The steak was terrible which was a shame given this is a restuarant specialising in Steak. The waitor also hung around for way too long trying to have a conversation with us rather than leaving us to our meal which was overpriced given the quality.
However, the interior of the restaurant is great and they have excellent cocktails!

An average meal let down by appalling service. We arrived for dinner sometime between 8:30 and 8:45pm - latish but not overly so for a Friday night or so we thought. The restaurant was nearly empty which we both thought unusual, however the wait-staff were happy to seat us. It was downhill from there. Despite a nearly empty restaurant, we were refused our choice of table and led to an area close to the kitchen, presumably so service would be easier. The steak I selected was OK and cooked to order. The mushroom and truffle side was lacking in truffle, the side of fries were overcooked and dried from sitting under the heat lamp for too long. The other order of venison was OK, but overall both dishes were pretty uninspiring for a restaurant aiming to be a premium dining experience.
During our meal wait-staff began noisily washing and banging the cutlery in the restaurant area adjacent to the kitchen - and our table. It was like listening to a sack of chains in a clothes drier, and it took 5 minutes before we could find our waiter and ask him to move the chain gang. They did so with dirty looks at our table.
By now we were the only people left dining, and after finishing decided to have a nightcap in the bar area. Mid drink our table was sprayed with cleaning fluid and wiped down - in other words '##ck off as we want to go home...'
I now know why they had no patrons on a Friday night. I dined at Mu shortly after it opened, and since then both food and service have gone downhill considerably. I doubt I'll be back.

On our third dining at MU my partner and I were not disappointed in the food but very disappointed in the service - felt there really was none.
We arrived when no one else was around asked to go to the bar - fair enough but no staff there for us to order a drink so we sat for a minute.
Were then shown to our table. After a minutre of two another table behind us were seated and the waitress saw them first. As we already had menus when she came to us we were able to order. The table behind us ordered about 2 - 3 mins after us yet their meals came out first. Ours came out about another 5 minutes later.
Apart from my patners meal having the wrong potato dish and being taken away and changed the meals were good up to their usual well cooked standard.
No one asked us how our meals were - usual practice about half way through dining. As for desserts, coffees and additonal drinks well, our plates got cleared the guy asked us if wanted dessert menus - I said yes and we never saw him again.
So overall due to lack of staffing on Mu's part they missed out on additional drinks order, coffee and dessert.
Come on Mu get your service act together - I go for the food but need to be served to get it.

Forster and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this restaurant! The table we were at seemed a little awkwardly situated but the food made up for it in abundance. My fillet steak was the best I'd ever had! The potatoes and veg were full of flavour and rich without being sickly. Foster had te T-Bone and was jealous of my fillet but satisfied with his perfectly cooked steak. Wait staff were friendly and honest (no fake smiles), and this added with the quality of the food made it one of our best dining experiences in Christchurch. The best Steak House I've ever been to, we will definitely be going again!

There is a table at Mu which is best avoided, but which we were allocated. It is adjacent to the balcony which overlooks the lower section of the restaurant.
If you are seated next to the railing facing toward the entrance, not only do you have a semi-precipitous drop to your right hand side, but you find yourself trapped on all four sides (railings x 2, adjacent chair, and table). You also spend the meal inadvertently peering down on the diners in the lower tables, making frequent embarassing eye contact because of the exposed nature of your position.
The food itself? My rump steak was fine if not exceptional, but two of our party were sure that their orders had been mixed up (same steak choices but cooked to different degrees). On inspection I had to agree.
The service was a little irritating - far too professionally brisk in a "there's no hurry but get a move on" kind of way.
We felt we were on a sort of culinery conveyor belt - sit, order, eat, go, but hey, take your time (not too much though).
To summarise, a slickly adequate but ultimately charmless place to dine. Food should be more fun.

One of the best steaks I've eaten in Christchurch, cooked to request. Wine prices at the high end, service could have been quicker, but to compensate it was friendly.

I'm a steak lover, and decided to try Mu out, so my partner and I booked in for lunch at 12.30. I got held up in Xmas traffic and phoned her, she advised the staff and was seated at 12.30. I arrived at 12.45 and at 12.55 I got up and asked for service (we had been ignored till that point, not even water. The restaurant was less than 1/3 full, and nearly 10 minutes later we got our menus.
We chose quickly and I waved down a wait person who took our orders - my partner had hers medium, but I like my steak blue and figured a "premium" steak restaurant could master that, so asked for blue. 25 minutes later (this is lunchtime) we got our steaks, and my partner was very happy. Mine was a very good rare steak - a nice cut and well served with a nice salad. But rare.
The waitress asked how things were, and I commented that my steak wasn't blue, and I was unhappy with the time taken. She offered to replace it, and I agreed.
Less than 5 minutes later my plate was returned, with my half eaten salad and a new steak. Only this one was raw. The outside had seen a hot pan, but the inside was ice cold and raw.
I didn't pay for my steak, which was good because I was hungry as hell and needed the money to buy lunch. Because I had spent nearly 2 hours at Mu, time was running out and I ended up using the McDonalds drivethrough for lunch, and I got exactly what I expected. Unlike at Mu.

Luckily we listened to the advice to show up 15 minutes earlier than the original booking (as they expected a BIG group later that night). Seated quickly after arrival, with a big smile and not rushed at all - even though it was already very busy - and drink orders taken in time.
Same soon after for our meals - and, yes, again the waitress (from Argentina) gave us the impression we were the only and most important guests that night.
The mains arrived, Porterhouse Steak for me, lamb shoulder for my partner - and cooked to perfection! We were also very impressed by the mash, the veggies and the simply outstanding "jus" :-) (also known as gravy). What a surprise to get such an outstanding meal on a very busy and hectic Friday night!
Dessert was really good, too, rounded off with an excellent coffee - all in all a much better "x-mas meal" out than expected!
PS: Once again a big compliment to the staff there, especially the waitress from South America - ole!

Went here a few months ago with a group of 12 when there was a 10 dollar special for steaks – who can say no to that. Was not too overwhelmed to be honest, seemed like something was missing, the steak was pretty plain, and there could have been more on the plate, although I guess this is what a ‘steak house’ is all about or could have been something to do with the fact it only cost 10 dollars. The décor is cool (not exactly subtle cow motif), although staff are a bit standoffish. The cooks were staring at us while we were eating which could be a bit unsettling, especially if they were laughing. I would probably give it another go if they put on another special.

Six of us went there for dinner. What a disaster!! THEY RAN OUT OF RICE for the risotto, yep RICE! Unbelievable. The ran out of two of the entrees and two mains. It took 2 HOURS for us to get our food! In the end I had the fish and it came out on some old dried up roast potatoes. The fish was meant to be Hapuka but it was so small I hardly had the chance to taste it!! The wait staff were doing their best in a really rubbish situation.
Been there 3 times now and every time have been let down!

I'd heard Mu describing themselves as the best steak house in Christchurch, so finally my partner and I decided to see what the fuss was about. Now I had spend almost two years as a senior chef at a rival upmarket steakhouse in town in the past so feel qualified to comment on my steak. And there wasn't much good to comment about.
We dined on a Monday night, were seated at 6pm and were the only people dining. The waitress was great, took our orders then repeated them back to us to make sure they were correct - a great start to the night. However it took over 20mins for our two cocktails to arrive, we'd ordered and received our breads in that time. Wasn't impressed considering how quiet the place was.
Mains came out fairly promptly, but this is where our experience went downhill. My partner wanted to take the healthy option and wanted salad with her roast veges. She was told you couldn't mix and match the options and we were charged $5 more just for a salad! Where as I had chips and salad without being charged. Both our steaks were ordered MR but came out MW. I just can't fathom how a "premium steakhouse" can stuff up steak. My fries were home made but were limp and tasteless, looked like they had been deep fried then re fried. Her sauce was bland and floury.
The waitress didn't come back so my partner had to get up and hunt out someone to take her steak back. 15mins later she was served an entire new meal but the MR sirloin was very grisly and she couldn't eat most of it. My steak wasn't how I wanted it but I was hungry so just put up with it. When we complained we received 10% off the bill, a good gesture but it hardly made up for the bad food.
Overall I was really unimpressed with the experience and even though it looked like they really tried to live up to their reputation, they in fact fell well short. I won't be returning or recommending Mu Steakhouse to anyone.

We went here after my other half had been a few months back on a Tuesday while away on business. He thought it was pretty good that time, so we went on Friday night. We'd booked earlier in the day, and only had to wait a few minutes while our table was made ready. Neither of us were overly hungry when we ordered, so we decided to skip the starters and just have mains, and maybe pudding if we wanted. It seemed to take quite a while for someone to come and take our orders, but its was pretty busy, so didn't think too much of this. Food order was taken pretty OK, but my partner must have had to say what wine we wanted about 6 times!! And when it appeared, it wasn't the right one. Once the correct bottle turned up, we asked for some Merlot glasses, seeing as we'd decided to treat ourselves to a nice bottle. Well, we thought this was a simple request, but all we got was a bemused look. My partner tried to explain, but to no avail, so all we ended up with were bigger versions of the same ones we were trying to avoid. Later on we tried to explain, after seeing another table with nice glasses, but all we got was a 'Oh, I didn't know!' So half enjoying our wine out of bad glasses, our mind turned to the food. We must have ordered at about 8.45pm and by 9.20 were starting to wonder where it all was. As were two others tables next to us. There was no communication from the staff, nothing. Unfortunately we were sat right next to the pass, so we did get to listen to the multitudes of staff arguing about the wrong orders going to the wrong tables. At this point, I must add that I was very impressed with the Head Chef - he seemed to remain very calm throughout! When our food finally arrived well after 9.30, it certainly wasn't worth the wait. I'd ordered my fillet medium / well (I know, but it's how I like them!), but it came out well / well. The other half's slab on the bone was cooked to his medium / rare, but was pretty much just fat and gristle. He's not a picky eater, but his plate was covered in scraps by the time he'd finished. Neither of our chips were cooked properly, my salad was brown and the vegetables were a bit too al dente! After all of that, I felt quite lucky walking out - the lady on the table next to us, who'd be waiting even longer for her food, was served raw chicken- which of course she sent back! Unfortunately we won't be going back - there are far too many good places to eat in Christchurch!

The week was pressing on, eager to reach its ever elusive seven day calendaric end, in its own timeless way, and I had risen early on the morning in question, changed out of my ornately festooned Medieval flannelette codpiece, extra large, into clothing more befitting my station in life and position in the community. My intention was, after all, to dine with munificence somewhere in town and, following a quick mental sweep through the central city streets, I pictured in my mind’s eye, a worthy recipient of my generosity, Mu Premium Steak House.
And so it was at the appointed hour, with appropriate grunts and snorts of pleasure, that I had the good fortune to be seated in a booth, under warm & effective mood lights, with a glass and a half of full cream milk……..no, a Craggy Range Block 14 Gimblett Gravels Syrah actually. The wine list here is well arranged and varieties and styles well represented. The beverage choice extends beyond wines, of course, to cocktails, spirits, beers and the non-alcoholics which is as it should be. Naturally there are few establishments in New Zealand that can offer anything nearing the range of fine wines found in restaurants overseas where 100+ well chosen labels is a starting point for entering the Wine Spectator award stakes with the Grand Award being given to a restaurant with 1250 labels which will include older vintages and rare wines. It is indeed a serious business!
As with many restaurants in New Zealand doing lunch at this time of the year, customers seemed scarce at Mu on this occasion and so service was polite, efficient and faultless. Of course, this is in no way meant to suggest that the quality of the service would be any less were the house full. The server was very professional and I could sense that she would easily manage under pressure.
First up was Duck & Grand Marnier Pate, a delectable, rich, duck liver tidbit and a fine precursor to the main dish, a 200gm Chargrilled Sirloin marinated in a smokey chipotle sauce with garlic roast potato, sautéed onion and rocket salad, all complemented with a red wine jus. At $19.50 I thought this very good value indeed.
It wasn’t to stop there, as it happened. I felt the need to ingest some more and chose the Chocolate and Chilli Crème Brulee; a sublime offering to the Gods One might say but still a good many heartbeats away from perfection. There were other deserts on the menu and there is a very real chance that I will succumb to the temptation to return and gobble another sometime soon.

Have been twice:
1st time great
2nd time very disappointed - won't be back because of it. Went with a group of 9. seated at 6:45, didn't get our meals until after 9pm despite ordering before 8pm! It wasn't that busy. Steaks were of varying degrees of cooked sometimes to order, sometimes way off. The childs meal of sausages and bread was just that, 5 small sausages and 2 pieces of toast! no sauces, chips or anything on the side. sausages weren't even cooked through and were swimming in sausage juices!. pretty disgusted really considering we were really happy with our first experience.

We arrived without a booking on a Thursday night, but we were told there was one table free, so off we scurried to claim it. It was unfortunately right in front of the meat cabinet. Now, I know I am in a ‘steak-house’ but I didn’t really feel the need to greet and bond with my steak before I devoured it! I asked if any chance of relocating, to be told no. So I sucked it up and got over it. But did feel like I was sitting in the meat aisle of the supermarket.
Anyhow, another waiter came and asked if we wanted drinks, we asked for a wine list, selected a hearty red for me and a beer for him.
Another waitress came and asked if we were ready to order, we weren’t, but ordered some breads and dips to share.
Then Another 2 came and asked if we were ready to order. Maybe I am greedy, but I do like to have one waiter/ waitress to myself, but oh well.
He ordered the rib eye and here ensued a many a question, salad/vege/potatoes sides/ sauces? I ordered the lamb rack with confit of lamb shoulder, bacon wrapped kidney and black olive and truffle oil mash.
The meals arrived, and I was in food heaven with the confit of lamb shoulder, meltingly tender and just delicious, the lamb rack (2 lamb cutlets) were overcooked and a quite tough, the kidney was cooked well and well, the mash was to die for. He looked as happy as, well, as happy as a bloke in a steak house! No room from dessert, but I saw a few going out and they looked good.

My husband and I dined here last year for his birthday. It was a weekday, so the atmosphere was relaxed and quieter than usual. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. As much as we were impressed with the professional service, unfortunately the food did not match the same standard. We both ordered the Soup of the Day, which was fairly good albeit slightly greasy and oily. For our entrée we shared the Pork and Atlantic Scallops, priced at $16.50. The portion was absolutely ridiculous for this price! There were only two small scallops (without the roe) with two tiny pieces of pork on top. It was unbelievable. We both ordered steaks, their specialty, for our mains. The steaks were cooked relatively well to our liking. Overall, the food is good, but the portions were disappointing for the amount we paid. The only thing we were impressed with was the helpful and attentive service from our waiter! Kudos to him. [by M.L.]

We dined here over the weekend, we came in fairly early around 6 pm and with no booking. We were shown to our table by our very efficient & friendly waiter who went out of his way to explain how the menu & steaks worked - even showed up the steaks and explained thier cuts. After a disappointing meal elsewhere we had thought we would not find a great steak venue - oh how wrong we were - we loved everything - we just didnt have room for dessert - our first visit and we will be back.

We booked a table for two for a Friday night dinner with hopes of a great dining experience at Mu and came away a little disappointed.
Our waiter was attentive without being intrusive and our steaks were both cooked to medium rare perfection, which sounds pretty good. And it was. But it wasn't great. The din in the resturant made the atmosphere feel more like we were dining at a noisy pub, our shared entree of campfire breads with oil and dips was run of the mill and the hand cut fries were soggy and served semi-warm.
Christchurch is very lucky to have a choice of quality steak houses to dine at, which is unfortunate for Mu. If it were the only establishment in town we would possibly return however, as there are superior alternatives, we are in no hurry to do so.

My husband and I loved this steak house. The meat was perfectly cooked, the potatoes delicious, and the dessert scrumptious. We were extremely pleased with everything, and will definitely return. It is an excellent steak house, and we highly recommend it if you are looking for a great steak at a great price!

very dissapointing. after touting itself as Chch's leading steakhouse, the steak was a little dry, overcooked and not that flavourful. I just expected more i guess. the dessert made little ground up as i had the espresso brulee which was great.
I have been to great steakhouses before that keep their meat for 3 weeks and this did not taste nearly as great.

My first visit to Mu and I was disappointed. Of the four steaks, 1 was way overcooked and had to be returned to the kitchen, another was overcooked but it was decided to keep it. I had a salad which was unimaginative and lacked flavour. It had fried potatoes in it which were oily and the flavour permented the other (non descript) flavours.
Dessert however was a step up from the mains, with the flavours and presentation being higher than I had expected.
I would struggle to call the service even average. Our guy was more interested in fiddling with his non performing palm pilot than talking or looking at us. On telling him steaks were overcooked he looked up before mentioned palm piolet and said it was ordered as medium...we knew that! We also knew the steak we were looking at was well done. He made no offer to rectify the situation and simply wandered off. We had to get him back to return the steak (for which the chef apologised as it was badly overcooked). Service from other staff wasrefreshingly better than our personality lacking robot.

Dined with a group on a Friday night, the place was quite busy.
Meals were excellent for this type of restaurant, not fine dining but a cut above usual bar grills and Tex Mex places. Pricing is aimed at the low $30's for mains which I felt was pretty good value. The menu has a good selection of mains and not just big steaks. I had the lamb rack which is a firm favourite. Steak dishes observed on the table all looked good too. The desserts are matched with drinks which was interesting. The dessert was nice and the liqueur even better. The service was friendly and efficient and meals arrived in timely manner. I recommend the Mu Premium steakhouse for the steak lover!

We visited the restaurant on a Thursday night, as we had not booked, waited for only a few minutes for a table and enjoyed a drink at the bar.
When we were seated we were served by about 4 different wait staff, had to wait almost an hour for our mains, which were very nice and tasty. We were not offered freshly ground black pepper, no pepper on the table either!
My partner ordered ginger beer, and was served ginger ale.
We were offered a desert menu, one only for two of us, which we had to wait quite some time for.
We chose to leave instead of risking another long wait for a dessert.
Value for money when using the entertainment book, (main for main)
Would probably not return in the near future.

I agree with the comment about 4 different staff serving you- it's not ideal- and the 1 hour wait is OK I guess... but what's the difference between ginger beer and ginger ale?

Took some out of town friends here - 8 of us. They are big meat eaters so I hoped it would be good and it was far better than I had hoped. In fact probably the best meat dishes I have had in Christchurch in 10 years of living here. Fantastic atmosphere and service of the highest standard. Normally I would provide food details but all our mains and desserts were excellent, perfectly cooked and tasty. Very highly recommended.

We went to Mu Premium Steakhouse for my boyfriend's birthday. He had been hankering after a good steak and after hearing some contradicting reviews, we decided to go and check it out for ourselves. On arrival we were met with a red carpet right up the small flight of stairs and into the giant wooden doors, then into a lush airy room with ambient lighting and an impressive looking bar. With a few friends we made a table of 6, and were seated in the small sofa area deemed by the waiter "A nicer area to dine" than the large open space adjacent to the open kitchen. The sofa booth was velvet-laid and spacious, providing us with an extensive wine list and a menu bound in hardback and in easy-to-read print. The lively waiter by the name of Theo brought water over, introduced himself, made us comfortable and asked us for our drinks. So far, so good.
After attending to a few other tables he came back, introduced the specials and assisted us in ordering our desired meals. My friend, a vegetarian was shown to the 'token' vegetarian dish, a dish of Aracini that he promised would be delicious. He was right. The cheese stuffed risotto balls were perfect melt-in-your-mouth balls, and nicely balanced with grilled eggplant and roasted seasonal vegetables. With gusto I delved into my medium-rare eye fillet. Tender and flavoursome, this was quality meat (albeit closer to medium than medium-rare). My mash was creamy as described, and the roast vegetables were the best I've ever tasted. Crisp and flavoured on the outside and smooth in the centre, this was simply quality produce cooked well. The wide variety of sauces you could choose to go with your steak were all met with nods of approval from the table.
The food was a success, as were the drinks although my cocktail was deemed the best by my two girlfriends. The place was busy on a Thursday night, and though the restaurant was understaffed we were attended to with enthusiasm. However the waiter did seem to forget us sometimes and it took a while for the orders to come out.
If you are after a good steak, this is the place to go. I would recommend the steak dishes as well as the token vegetarian dish!

My husband and I visited this on a Saturday. We hadn't made a booking but we were quite early and they found us a table. Our waitress was great and explained how everthing worked. I had the steak with the blue cheese sauce and the mash and vegetables. My husband had the garlic and peppercorn sauce. The meal was very nice and would recommend to others.

Loved the food here, was delicious! The one downfall - service, helpful enough but not very smiley or overly friendly, more quick to get you through. Was still eating last bites of my entree when plate was taken away from under me as main arrived - this was rude and a little disappointing - however the food was delicious so I will be visiting again - maybe experience different wait staff!

We chose Mu for our evening out based on reviews from Dine Out, but have to say overall we came away quite disappointed! We had booked for 8pm, arriving right on time, but we had to wait until 8.45pm to be seated - to long! Once seated, the service from Glen was very good, and he explained the menu well. We were told that they had run out of T-Bones, but luckily no one wanted that! We did order the famous Mash, but 15 minutes later were told by a very rude waitress that they had run out of Mash and that we would be having chips instead! No apologies were offered, and when we spoke to the manager he simply said they had had a lot of people in off the street and they weren't prepared for the influx! Shame on you, Mu, running out of something like Mash is inexcusable!! Also, the wine we ordered had also run out but they did redeem themselves here by offering us a more expensive bottle at the cheaper price. The food - just average - the scallop and pork entrees were tiny but did have a good tatse. But all 4 of us were very disappointed with our steaks - tough and chewy and the chips that replaced the Mash were average also. We were given $20 vouchers as an apology for the poor meals, but will we go back and use them - I'm not so sure! My biggest gripe is that we made a booking for 8pm, but in the mean time they take casual diners that obviously impacted on our service and quality of food - not good enough!
