We enjoy the food here & the coffee sometimes. Its inconsistent and the service is okay. It would be nice if they smile and greet you at the counter instead of feeling like you have interrupted their conversation.

Thoroughly enjoyed my eggs florentine, chosen from the huge blackboard menu of pizzas, breakfast items, specials of the day and the option for lots of sides (including homemade sausages and home cured bacon).
Eggs were free range and perfectly poached sitting atop wilted spinach and smothered in a gorgeous hollondaise.
Coffee was a good temperature - so often I find that coffee is cold - and a nice blend.
Wasn't noisy at all, nice and warm on a cold and rainy day and the staff were certainly very pleasant.
Wish I had room for one of the gorgeous looking slices or cakes...maybe next time.

For a huge space I would have expected the noise level to be unbearable, but it wasn't. There was only a low conversational hum despite the place being jam-packed with diners. As it was a freezing day outside we ordered soup for lunch. I had spicy tomato and red lentil and my partner had kumara and bacon. My soup was well spiced, but not too much so. Every now and then I thought I could detect the texture of lentils, so I guess they were in there somewhere but they certainly didn't have enough of a presence to justify the name. However it was a tasty tomato soup. I had a mouthful of my partners soup and it was tasty also, with nice little crispy bacon pieces throughout. The accompanying bread was good, and the coffee hit the spot. The service was very efficient but not overly personal.

I had coffee and although it was $4, it was good quality coffee and well presented.
I also had a caramel slice which was nice and sweet and I had no problems with it.
Although they gave me a knife with it, I'm not sure if maybe a fork or a spoon would have been more appropriate?
The service was okay, I was served by two different people, one better than the other, at least one of them smiled at me.
I found there were a lot of children there when I went, I guess mothers take their children to the cafe with them during the day.
The prices of the food were pretty high but it looked like there was a good selection although I didn't see anyone else in the cafe eating anything off the menu, a sign maybe?

Had a wonderful dining experience here while on holiday in the Wairarapa. Enjoyed the wonderful Earl Grey tea so much I asked the waitperson where I could buy it. He not only wrote down the name the of supplier but added, ph numbers, address and email address. Can recommend their Eggs Benedict

The Cafe is in a very large area which was once the service block of a motor garage. Despite this it works well as an eating space (with outside areas at the side as well), though you could look a little lonely on a quiet day. On the day we visited, there were plenty of lunchers, and luckily we hit the front of one rush of them to place our orders. Order-taking was slow, but the main reasons for this were a very extensive blackboard menu and an order-taker who listened, explained, made suggestions, and ensured we all received what we wanted. Good coffee. Our lunch plates varied - a respectable chicken and brie pizza fed two, with a green salad added readily (with an apology that it would have to be charged for!); pumpkin soup was average, the cheese platter offered generous servings (well above the promised 100gm total for a small platter) of well prepared and ripened cheeses. Meals and drinks came out fast enough - we enjoyed this experience.

First up, the service was surly, slow and delivered with a sneer. We waited for ages and saw people who arrived after us receive their meals- some the same that we had ordered. The coffee arrived luke warm and we didn't expect to pay $5 for a cappuccino that seemed a regular size. In fact we didnt know there were different sizes available as when we ordered coffee we were not asked if we wanted regular or large. My wife ordered mushrooms on toast...toast being the key word, What arrived was tiny mushrooms fried in something synthetic on fried bread that was burnt and rock hard. I ordered home smoked bacon on toast....again fried bread with very average bacon. There was no presentation involved...no relish on the side, or sauce of any type. Just greasy bacon on overcooked fried bread. Even our pre teen kids commented on their greasy toasted sandwiches. Yuck! We left feeling ripped off and sick. We will never go back there again.

From other reviews it sounds like the standards at the Village Cafe have been slipping and our experience the other day confirmed this. Prices are very expensive - $19.50 for a vegetarian breakfast. We opted for mushrooms on toast and poached eggs on toast. The eggs and mushrooms were fine, but bland. The toast was totally dreadful though. It was about half a centimetre thick, burned, and hard as a rock. Mushrooms were flying everywhere as I tried to cut that thing up.
The coffee was ok, but also expensive at $4 for a flat white. We had a hot cross bun which was lovely.
My main gripe with the Village Cafe was the service. At these prices, I expected our coffees to arrive promptly and hot, whereas they arrived halfway through the meal, lukewarm. We were told there were big delays, which I couldn't understand, as they were only about a third full, and there were plenty of staff. Mostly teenagers, so no smiles in sight.
