Its three years since my first review - when you think about it, that means that on about a thousand days the master baker and his staff have made and sold the finest french breads and patisseries - I feel tired just thinking of that. Their lunch menu (winter version) offers a small selection of meals. I chose Parkvale mushrooms (from just a few kilometres away) on toast (from the bakery) and it came with a fresh green salad with a dressing with vinagrette influences. Fresh local food - could there be a better lunch? Recommended

Decided to pop over to Greytown for lunch and for a wee browse around the shops. Had lunch at the French Baker. The cafe was light and airy with a breeze coming through the open doors which was a relief given it was a hot day.
The ham rolls were tasty but the raspberry custard flan was divine! The pastry was light and crisp and the filling not overly sweet topped with fresh raspberries. The coffee was acceptable.
Overall a pleasant enough lunch but would have been even more so if the service had been more welcoming and friendlier. Unless you are a "regular" there, the service was perfunctory.

In early january eight of us popped in for brunch. We ordered and paid in couples as it's counter service. The queue wasn't that long but it took about 20 minutes for all our orders to be taken. The waiting staff messed up every order and forgot several items. The food was tastless and dull. After 40 minutes we were still waiting on several coffees. After an hour 3 of still hadn't received our food despite reminding several staff at least 3 times, one was a bowl of muesli which is surely not that hard to pour into a bowl. After an hour and a quarter 2 of us had still not received our food and all the dirty crockery from the rest of our table was still sitting on the table, we piled them all up in the hope they would be removed but they were ignored.
We were back in Greytown last weekend and needed some bread so popped in to buy a couple of loaves. Despite there being only 3 people in the queue ahead of me it took over 15 minutes to be served, once agin the staff had no idea what they were doing. Obviously things haven't changed in the sevice department. To add salt to the wounds the bread we bought was hard and stale and we had to chuck it out. Thank goodness for the supermarket across the road.
These guys really need to pick their act up in all departments.

I travelled through Greytown this morning and stopped at this place that I had heard a lot of positve talk about .
Really enjoyed the pain au chocolat and my partner enjoyed the plum brioche which she said was delicious, had a coffee that was not that great but decided to take a loaf of the sour dough home. As was told by the staff this popular loaf was excellent and will endeavour to return to try the other baked goods in the near future.

The selection of fresh baked food is fantastic. However, this is probably the only occasion EVER when I have left my long black unfinished, even after several attempts; it tasted revolting. If I'm ever back, I won't be ordering coffee.

I notice that your review is almost identical to that of a CafAchick who reviewed le Pommier on 1st of march 2008.
http://coffee.gen.nz/cafe/317-le-pommier-french-bakery
Le Pommier is the name of the cafe owned previously by the same people but located accross the road.
Tne French Baker is a different cafe in a different location and most probably with a different barista, a different espresso machine and coffee bean supplier.
Assumedly i may be mistaken if you are a different reviewer and i apologise if so.
Perhaps if you are the same person in the two reviews you could differentiate the two experiences by varying your wording a little more. This would avoid the impression that you have just transposed the one review to the other.

My mistake. I have never been to Le Pommier and intended to review The French Baker, so I apologise for any confusion my review on the other site may have caused. I have now removed it - thanks for pointing this out.Login to vote Yes, a great reviewx0This review should be deletedx0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook
