My wife and I made the unfortunate decision to dine at Reef's on the 14th of January 2010. It looks good from outside with a fine balcony. But do not judge a book by its cover etc.
She who must be obeyed ordered the scallops wrapped in bacon. I would suggest to Reefs dispense with the bacon, wrap them in rubber and sell them as squash balls. The "scallops" were served on top of a watery rice dish which looked like a highly magnified picture of spermatoza desperately trying to find a way out of the hell it had found itself in.
I had the steak. Let me put it this way - had I been enterntaining at home and had cooked a steak like this I would have thrown it to the dog and started again. It came with a so-called "cream pepper sauce". Imagine eating a cream coloured liquid - which had been sitting around long enough to form a skin over it - which had been enhanched by adding the contents of a shotgun cartridge to it. To rub salt into the wounds they charge TOP prices for their "food". If you find yourself outside this place go to the hamburger joint to the left. This was one the most awful eating experinces that my wife and I had ever endured. In fact, we registered on this site for the first time to warn people.
AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!!!!!!

Went for lunch there on a quiet Saturday. Had Whitebait fritters advertised... yum usually my favorite! The first ones that arrived were cold and looked as though they had been made yesterday and then reheated in the micrwave (rubbery and yuck), I sent them back and got two more the size of pikelets. At least they were fresh this time but what a rip off at $18.50!
My fellow guests had burgers that were pretty uninspiring, and one other had crumb prawn cutlets- I would say straight out of a frozen dinner box from the Cash and Carry.
Don't bother... plenty of better places to eat in Wanaka!

I would add further:
Shocking behaviour of the owners.
Strange concepts of bookings.
It's a pity that this shocking restaurant still existing in such a beautiful Wanaka area.
I agree with you...Don't bother and not recoomended.Login to vote Yes, a great reviewx1This review should be deletedx0 | Add your feedback to this | Share on Facebook

The Reef Restaurant & Bar is an informal, yet professional place to dine with fantastic views over Lake Wanaka. It suits a crowd of any age from young to old and provides efficient service and well-priced meals. The decor is simple, yet comfortable. Food arrived quickly from time of order and the staff were friendly. Overall a good dining experience.
