What a quaint and homely place to dine! You enter this cafe by wrapping your hands around the waist of a sleek metal woman. Stepping into the interior, the decor is charming - quilts and other handcrafts adorn the walls and the booths are very comfortable, with their handmade cushions. Nicely private too. The wee courtyard at the back was lovely, but we abandoned it when the wind picked up. It was a rather quiet sunday afternoon, and the young fellow behind the counter was amiable and pleasant. He waited patiently whilst we selected from teh cabinet. The range of choice was not great - a mixed selection of cakes, scones and bread-based products (panini, sandwiches and bagels), but everything looked tasty. Besides, sunday is clearly a quiet day in Papanui cafes, and thus overstocking the cabinet would be wasteful. The Cranberry, camembert and chicken paninis looked delicious, so both my companion and I selected these, with a rich pecan tart and hot drink (Chai for me, flat white for he) to follow. The Server was perfectly happy to bring over the hot drinks and the sweets when we had finished our savoury, and thus we selected our booth down one end. The folk music playing at moderate volume made a pleasant background noise without being too distracting, and without great delay, our platters were delivered (on colourful plates). The paninis had been pressed to a crunchy-crisp brown, and the cheese oozed delightfully with every bite. Those of you who follow my reviews probably know that I often ask for "no cheese", but that does not mean that I cannot appreciate the more gourmet cheese (especially when intermingled with the tart sweetness of cranberry and the smoky goodness that is chicken). I am just not a cheddar fan and am also watching the weight. Despite the latter, I could not resist the pecan tart and it was decadent indeed. For all its diminutive size - small enough to perch on a teacup saucer, any bigger and I could never have finished it. The pastry-crust was quite thick and filled to a peek with an array of nuts - not just pecans. There were walnuts as well, and I fancy macadamias, and my companion reckons some were hazelnuts. Over this nutty-pyramid had been poured a rich caramel sauce, encrusting the nuts and soaking into the pastry crust. It was an effort to finish, but what a treat to the tastebuds. The chai latte also was nicely spiced. For its quaint surrounds and lovely, laidback feel, the Memories is a lovely place for lunch and to trade goss. Also, if you are interested in the hobby, you can also acquire many quilting supplies (and there's a beading shop next door). It might not be of news to note that most of the other patrons were women.
