We were visiting Rotorua with our children and had heard good things about Indian Star so made a point of going there for dinner.
They were pretty busy so we had to wait for a table. When one became available we were seated at our table and given menus. Unfortunately it seemed like we were then forgotten about for a while as we had to wait longer than usual for our orders to be taken.
The waiter who eventually served us was very pleasant and advised us that all the food would come out together to avoid a wait.
Despite this our starters of onion rings and vegetable samosas came out first but no cutlery. When I asked for cutlery it was eventually brought over but it was piled up on the side of the table and left. There was also no napkins until we asked for them. The food was quite tasty but we were disappointed with the poor service.
Our order of butter chicken and tikka masala came next and was quite tasty but we did find the medium tikka masala's too hot to enjoy properly. I would recommend you go mild/medium if you don't like your food too spicey.
Overall I was disappointed with the experience as I was expecting a great dinner after seeing all of the great reviews this restaurant receives. I may try this restaurant again in the hope that we caught them on a bad night.
A very child friendly restaurant - they made my young daughters feel very welcome.
My husband and I shared a mixed platter starter which was excellent. The mains were not quite so good - a bit bland and took a long time to come out after the starters were cleared.
The decor was clean and modern with a good choice of seating outside, on a deck or in the main restaurant.
Service was mainly excellent, though my husband had to go up to the bar to order a drink after failing to catch the attention of any passing waiters.
Would certainly return if I find myself in Rotorua again - if only for the lovely attitude towards the children!
Another great meal at Indian Star for four of us over the weekend.
This time I tried the Prawn Malabari - it was very tasty, with subtle flavours.
Ray you and your team deserve to win Rotorua's best restaurant!
A group of six of us went to Indian Star for lunch to celebrate my son's birthday We all ordered the non-vegetarian banquet and the food was absolutely beautiful, the service was very friendly.
Everyone enjoyed the experience immensely and we will be back again soon.
thanks so much Ray and staff - you do a great job!
We Continuously get great customer service, with Fast delivery. We order regularly and the standards never drop.nthe pan fried prawns are to die for. The butter chicken is very rich and creamy. Diffently my favourite Indian resturant.
The Indian Star serves fantastic food. The curries are smooth and creamy(if they are supposed to be) with the delicate touch of spices coming through. The service was very good and we were treated like special guests. The resturant was busy when we arrived but we were still served very quickly. I would absolutely return to the Indian Star.
We had a takeaway lunch from The Indian Star and it was fantastic. The service was excellent and the food was prepared very quickly. The Chicken Tikka was delicious and the Naan was the best I'd ever had, we'll definitely be back!
The Indian Star is one of our favourite dining experiences in Rotorua. The staff are absolutely fantastic and really make you feel welcome and valued from the moment you walk through the door. It's a fantastic experience with excellent, well prepared food and great hospitality. I have a young family and my young son loved both the food and the attention! My only regret is we didn't have room for dessert, as the Gulab Jamun on the next table looked awesome. Defintely next time!
Indian Star is a personal favourite of mine. The service here is friendly and efficient. Over the past 8 years we have been to the indian star many times, though I wouldn't say that we are huge regulars - perhaps 3 or 4 times a year, yet the staff recognise us and know us by name. The food is always great and anything left over is always taken home in a doggy bag for the next day.
A great Indian restaurant!
I am a frequent diner at the Indian Star restaurant in Rotorua and am never disappointed. From the warm personal welcome as you walk in the door until the time you leave, you are treated to a dining experiance and service rarely seen today. The food is excellant, always prepared to a high standard. On very busy nights (more and more often) you may need to be a little patient, yet it is well worth the wait, believe me. I recommend the Butter Chicken, Chilli Chicken or my personal favourite, Chicken Vindaloo with an ice cold Kingfisher beer.
Put the team Indian Star to the test..it will be a night to remember.
Since my preferred Indian was closed, I have been lost for a decent Indian in Rotorua. We were told this had been voted the best and learned a new way to interpret that.
We arrived at 7.40 on a Friday night. They were busy but there were a few spare tables, so not at capacity. We knew what we wanted before we arrived so ordered as we sat down. 40 ong minutes later, our food arrived and the saag paneer had that darkened sheen that only happens when something has been sitting around. For how long? Who knows. It was made with almost as much cream as spinach and as a result it was far too rich for us. Very Kiwified.
The cauliflower on our other dish was pretty overcooked and was quite soft but the flavour was great even if it was a little oily. The breads were nice enough.
Maybe it would be different if we went at a less busy time, but no. Any decent restaurant should be able to deliver the goods when busy.
"The best restaurant" I guess only means one that pleases the most people, not one that is necessarily the best at anything.
Boys weekend in Smellytown, MTB's and beer, so only curry will suffice. Had heard good things, and was not disappointed. Free pops, and entrees of Chicken Tikka (huge) and bhaji were lovely, and mains of Butter Chicken, Jalfrazi and Dhal Makhni were well formed and dead yummy. Breads were dead nice, via a trad tandoor - ask for the paratha, not on the menu but will do it for you if you ask. Great service, restaurant was packed, great stuff.
Indian Star have the best Butter Chicken ever! The service is always great, and the staff are friendly and seem to remember you, even if its been a while since you've visited! That just gives you warm fuzzies all over...!
Indian Stsar is the best Indian Restaurant in Rotorua. The food is always tasty, well cooked and the service prompt and friendly. I like all the chicken dishes and the potaoto dishes are delectable.Complimentary popodoms are a nice touch and they have nice peppermints. The owners know us rally well and always give us a gift and card at Christmas, it's nice to be appreciated as regulars. I must have eaten there at least 30 times in the past 6 years and I never get sick of it.
We've been here a couple of times, not regularly as it is a bit of a hike from Auckland, but they have the best vindaloo we've had in a restaurant. Specifically the best chicken vindaloo, but the Saag Gosht we had the other night was great too. Friendly staff, they might move you through pretty fast if they are busy though, and it's probably a good idea to book on a weekend.
The most fantastic butter chicken in all of Rotorua (in my opinion, & I've tried most of them).
Complimentary poppadoms on arrival are a nice touch, and the staff are always friendly, efficient and polite.
They also do a great mixed platter if you want to try a variety of dishes.
