I was really impressed with the vegetarian and vegan food here, very fresh and friendly staff with really quick service despite the line out the door, which is obviously a good sign! Brown rice sushi rolls and the plum pie were a huge treat.
As regular weekend customers since our arrival in Wellington 4 years ago -we find this cafe delivers a great variety of counter foods and fantastic coffee. For those times when only an exceptional flat white is going to 'hit the spot' - we come here. Of course it helps that as vegetarian/vegan eaters we are catered to with such good quality meals such as the spelt vegetable pie and the glorious sushi rolls - yum! They have a range of sweet dishes that have that honest, tasty homemade element that is truly satisfying.
Apart from the traffic, sitting outside at the Deluxe on a nice day at the end of summer is still OK. Especially as this place is so small and cramped inside.
The counter, top shelf, vego food is still divine. A huge slice of savoury roast pumpkin pie, topped with a big dollop of yoghurt, is enough for lunch. With still the best coffee in town, by a long shot, go vegetarian !
I love this food. They make some really tasty items of food which are reasonably priced for a cafe ($5-$7 for my fav stuff from memory). It's really healthy down to earth food and I believe from memory it's the first time I've ever seen sushi rolls made from brown rice. It's hard to comment on the environment as it's often so jammed packed with lines out the door when I go in, so personally as it's not really my scene and I do takeaway. Staff are friendly and seems to be efficient given the vast numbers of people I've encountered round weekend lunch time.
When living in London remembering Deluxe would remind me how great cafes can be in NZ. And on my first visit back I was so pleased it was still the same - delicious healthy food (made for taste not profit!), perfect coffee, and a cool local style. Can't understand how the reviewer a few back found the coffee under-par because whenever I go, which is a lot, it is crema rich, silky milked and spot-on. Fair point that the ordering system is a bit weird and some days it can take ages to get your order through but i think the staff do pretty well working in such a narrow galley space. And once you get to know them they're really friendly, just not in a cheesy "have a nice day!" kinda way. Food to note: the sushi rolls, date scones, salads, oat slice and all the cakes. And the spelt flour crust vegetable pie is goodness on a plate.
It's small (and can be cramped, particularly on a wet day at rush times) but the food (with an emphasis on inventive vego and vegan but not exclusively so) is tremendous, the coffee also and the staff simply very funky. While the size is not especially user-friendly and the place can be overwhelmed by crowds of lycra-packing cyclists or small children starring in their own endless one-act, one-person, egocentric dramas, it's the best cafe in Wellington by a fair margin.
I am such a fan of this cafe, along with many of my friends and family, I felt a need to defend it under the recent bad review from the person who obviously had no idea about cafes!! This amazing Wellington institution has the absolute best coffee and food of any other cafe in Wellington, Hands down. The crew of people that work there, are always friendly and make an effort to make you feel at home, unlike many other cafes in town. The food is largely Vegan and vegetarian and is all made daily on the premises, which is amazing in itself, its all organic and always great value for money. It does get very busy and sometimes there is a cue, but you get your coffee and food almost instantly once at the counter, eliminating any waiting around for thing to arrive at your table, which is a great way to do it, the coffee is consistently fast and the best in town, probably even NZ. Deluxe is a small cafe, therefore it is not entirely child friendly. Keep up the amazing work Deluxe.
This place is such a strange mix of exceptionally bad service, mangy premises, below average coffee and great food that it's hard to know which market they're aiming at.
I go to Deluxe for coffee and food occasionally as it's close to work but each and every time I'm amazed how rubbish the service is. The arrogant slow staff would be the first thing to go if I owned the place. Unless you happen to be one of the regulars, like the dog woman who inhabits the footpath outside, trying to give the staff your order is like trying to herd cats - next to pointless. They seem to have an almost organic ordering system - you tell them what you'd like and they give you food. Sometimes it's even what you've asked for !
The premises are pretty nasty but that can't be blamed on anyone other than the owner of the building and there are plenty of other food establishments in similar sites which are fine, as long as you feel the staff are up to keeping the rats and roaches out. With this lot I'm not convinced.
On the coffee front I'm not sure how they fail. This used to be a Havana owned shop but now I believe it's not and as they are about the only spot in town who manages to turn out a below average cup of Havana almost consistently I'd have hoped the Havana team would have had the good sense to give them some training or stop supplying them. I've read some other reviews which say they are fast at making a cup but I, and plenty of my friends and co-workers, feel completely the opposite. The more people waiting the slower they seem to get. And gosh forbid you should confuse them by asking for something difficult like sugar in a coffee !! oh by the way I think Havana is one of the best coffee's in Wellington beaten only by a well brewed Supreme. I use Havana in my home Espresso machine so i'm not against the beans used.
Now the food is pretty good. It is mostly veggie and I know plenty of people who go for the gluten free, vegan etc options and for that they get big up's. the food is always interesting and they do make some great tasting stuff which seems to be fairly seasonal.
Overall this place needs to put some socks on (clean preferably) and then pull them up. They've got a long way to go before becoming anything like Deluxe.
Well the good reviews mystify me, because I've been three times, each just for coffee and a snack, and who knows why I returned twice. The coffee ranged from passable to terrible, I've only ever had worse coffee in a Wellington cafe once. Food was ok though.
I have been going to the deluxe cafe now for about 7 years and i thought it was time to write a review. The food is why people go. delicious, healthy and there is also choices for vegans and celiacs etc... Over the years the cooks have changed and i think they hit a high last year when one of the first male cooks was working. He made the best muffins, scones, pizza. everything. He hasnt been there permanently for a while but he has been spotted filling in. my advise is if you see him cooking, go and try it. delicous
What a great place! Whilst the staff appeared to be uninterested and quite aloof the food made up for it all. The atmosphere was superb and coffee could not have been better. Keep the good work up team!
Love this cafe. The food is great. Esp reccommend the pizza, YUM! I'm not a big fan of Havana coffe, but for those of you who are into the barista's are very fast. There is usually a long line in the weekday mornings. But worth the wait if you're not running late for something. The environment in a little cramped at times, but cozy and funky. Took my firends from out of town here... who loved it too. Highly reccommended!
These guys have a lot of good reviews already but I thought I'd give them a good word anyway. The food and drinks are great and the service good. Can be a nice place to catch some afternoon sun. The space is small and the seats not too comfortable, but the 'vibe' is great - very relaxing place. And the art on display, which changes frequently, is often worth a look. Definitely recommend this place.
Food is always fresh (often baking as you walk in), wholesome quality ingredients and very tasty. While their savoury dishes are consistently excellent, their deserts are good. Salads have a little less flavour than they used to have (dressing might have changed). Shame the place isn't just a little bigger, as it's always full and the tables are pretty small. The best cafe in Wellington hands down. Interestingly, nearly all the food is vegetarian (but still tastes great :-)!
My favourite place to drop in when down that end of Courtenay Place. Very friendly staff, great food, probably the best atmosphere of any cafe in Wellington. Being very small there is no loo, but the Embassy next door have very good ones! The staff here can whip throught the orders and pour coffees so fast, it makes me wonder why other cafes are so slow. Might have something to do with people in a rush before the movie starts. Top marks to you folk.
