We were reccommended this place by some friends, so thought we'd give it a try.
We got takeaways on the way home one night. At almost $80 we had high hopes.
The antrees were terrible. everything was just covered in so so much raw onion, and yoghurt, by the time we got home, any pastry that was deep fried was just a soggy mess. Don't really know if the flavours were nice, because all we could taste was raw onion. We had 3 different entrees, and all were the same, covered in so much yoghurt and onion, we had no idea which was which from the menu.
The mains were nice.
But the takeaway containers were put in the bag 'standing up' so leaked everywhere.
And the poppadoms were put in the bag just sitting on top of the other containers, not in a bag or anything. They were all totally crushed by the time we got home.
The breads were bad too, like a grilled cheese under the grill (cheese on top, not inbetween...)
We went on for lunch. My wife had the special dosa which comes with the amazing ginger chutney. She loved it.
I had the special fish curry. It was an amazingly huge serve, enough for 2 or 3 people. And then for some reason, instead of one roti that I had asked for, they gave me two. I came out absolutely stuffed with enough food for my next meal in a doggy bag. I am having this fish again, it was amazing.
We have been here a few times. We love the dosas here. This review is just for our last visit.
We love the special dosas, especially the ginger chutney. Everytime, I come, I take some of the ginger chutney home. I highly recommend these.
Went to Satya last night for takeaways, I normally dine in at Indian resturants with friends. But last night was my son's 16th birthday and he wanted takeaways.
For 3 mains chicken dishes and two Paratha's (as they didn't have naan) cost $60 I thought this was excessive and more like dine in prices. However this place was recommended to me, so I paid the prices.
When I arrived home with the food, the first thing I noticed was the small amount of rice for 3 people.
Then the dishes were very much gravy and not much meat, the paratha's were the worst, exactly like I buy from the supermarket and they charged $3.95 per peice. Very small and not homemade.
We were still hungry after eating all of the food. The flavours were nice but overly priced and small portions.
I will not go back.
The worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. We made a booking for 10 people and there was no space to sit. The restuarant was so congested and hard to even move around. The service was as bad. Didn't get served till about an hour after we arrived. We had to keep calling the staff for water and utensils or going up to them. The food was average. We had brougjt 2 wine as it's BYO. But to our shock they charged us $40 for corkage when the wine was only worth $20. $4 per person was the corkage which Is ridiculous. Its meant to be per bottle not per person! Never going back. A total rip off and horrible service.
We went to Satya about two years ago and it blew us away. We went today and it was run-down and dirty. The tables were greasy and pulling your own plastic chair in left greasy fingers. The butter chicken was so brown sugary that our girls loved it. The special dry fish curry was not Terakihi as described by the chief – it had the consistency of steak and must have been wahoo (old wahoo judging by the strong “on the off-side” of fresh flavour). The final blow came when paying – two people equals $8 corkage! Dirty and run-down yet we parted with Parnell cuisine money. No Longer can recommend! It used to be that they brought colouring pencils for kids and gave them a gift – now – nothing. We had to ask for plates and wine glasses but paid dearly for the dirty glass privilege!
Went to satya after hearing that the food was really good and I must go and try it. Fair enough so went along taking a bottle of wine as it is BYO with 2 friends. I enjoyed the night, staff were friendly, service was prompt but the place is a bit small and is ery much for a casual night out. I tried the prawn entree which I loved, perfectly cooked prawns and good flavours. Then for the main I had the masala dosa as the friend said I must try the dosas. It was ok. I am maybe not the biggest fan of indian food I only get the occasional cravings for it that is probably after having quite a lot of bad indian meals. In saying that I like how it was served the flavors were good and ate all of it. So next time I feel like Indian will go back, great prices, BYO and a good style of Indian.
The second time we have been here, and the food was terrific. We had standard Indian fare (chicken tika masala, lamb kourma) along with their really interesting "must have" specialty entree (the name of which I've forgotten: five delicate pieces involving tamarind, potato etc).
But, outside the food, they could do with sharpening up their act. The service was very ordinary - and we and another table had to go in search of a waiter to place an order. It wasn't a matter of not enough staff, but lack of attention. No excuse, really, because there were only three tables with diners.
They also need to remember that this is Sandringham, and watch their prices, which are nudging Ponsonby Rd Indian restaurant levels. The restaurant has zero ambience and is in a pretty run-down part of town, so doesn't offer that "night out" experience.
But hard to fault the food.
I'm British and love Indian food. This is the BEST Indian cuisine I've had here. The friend that took my husband and me goes regularly and hasn't had better. Really friendly service. Decor was simple but warm. Food was so different to the bog standard you see in most Indian restaurants. If you want a butter chicken, you will be disappointed. The food had amazing flavour and texture. We all chose different meals so we could try everything. I will definitely return. The Dahi Puri and Bhel Puri entrees were amazing and very unusual. I chose the Palakura cottage cheese curry, it really complimented the other two's choice of a chicken and fish curry. The cottage cheese was almost like tofu, rather than the cottage cheese you get in a tub.
This was our second visit to Satya's in sandringham and we were disappointed.
We walked into a very cold room at 6pm, it was bitterly cold outside and it was not better inside. The whole idea about dining out is to relax and to enjoy. We sat there with our winter coats and scarfs still on. There was only one small heater on which was than moved to the back part of the restaurant. We felt very uncomfortable during the hour we spent at Satya's.
We ordered the bhel puri and the dahi puri which was nice.
My mother and friend ordered the masala dhosa. One had enough potatoe filling and the other was almost devoid of any.
I ordered the three piece dhosa. Well to my surprise I got one whole dhosa which was filled with green chillies, raw onion and ginger. There was nothing to rave on about this dhosa. I dont understand why they call it a three piece dhosa when its just one piece filled with raw ingredients. Very disappointing.
Overall a very average meal and the fact that it was like a fridge inside did not help. I would not go to Satya's again.
My partner and I drove past this restaurant and had heard amazing things about their food. We decided to go, and were not at all disappointed. The food was EXCEPTIONAL!! All the food was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing!!
The service was very slow. My partner had their food at least ten minutes before mine was served. The staff were very friendly.
The decor was nothing to rave about, but that doesn't matter... the food was the best!! I will be going back many times over and want to try everything on their menu!
After travelling to Auckalnd to watch Cirque du Soleil, my wife and I took a cab to Satya for a much anticipated visit, after the restaurant was recommended to us by a friend. We ordered four entrees to start: Samosa Chat, Mirchi Bajji Majaka, Pani Puri and Dahi Puri. The Puris were great and I preferred the Dahi Puri. The yoghurt was very thick and had a delicious sour creaminess to it. The Samosa Chat was good too, but fairly similar to the Dahi Puri. The Pani Puri came with a spicy water to pour into the Puri. The Mirchi Bajji Majaka had a thick doug and not like a pakaora batter that I was expecting. For the mains I ordered the Murg Badami and my wife had the Lamb Vindaloo. The Murg Badami was the better of the two. The whole almonds, flavours and colour were fantastic combination and it was a very large serving. Whereas the Vindaloo, while also flavoursome, lacked any real heat. When asked how ht we wanted it we asked for the chef to cook it as an authentic Indian heat, but this had virtually none and was more like a Rogan Josh. All the other flavours were there though – so all was not lost. We had a Garlic Cheese Paratha and Roti too. The Paratha was bizarrely topped with cheddar cheese, similar to Kiwi cheese on toast – and hardly authentic Indian food. The Roti was good and faithful to the Indian recipe with a distinctive ghee taste coming through. We had enough leftovers for another tasty meal the next day
This Indian restaurant in Sandringham consistently delivers the goods. Some of the comments about slow service are probably warranted but it seems to have improved somewhat since they've opened up an additional room for dining. Still, if you are in a hurry might be best for takeaway.
Some favorites:
The Dahi Puri: (as mentioned) is a particularly good (and unique) entree.
Spinach Paneer Curry: A rich tangy and sweet mixture for the vegetarians. We always get this.
Dal Makhani: Another vegetarian winner. Comfort food.
Murgh Badami: A good chicken option.
Satya Special Chicken: This one is unique. Cooked with banana leaf.
Overall, we usually get takeaways from this place but if you have a bit of time it's a pretty good place to go as well. You can bring your own wine.
I dined here for the second time with a group of friends and thoroughly enjoyed the food. The dahi puri is a must try and the dosas are very nice as well.
My only concern is the slack service that is given by the waiters, if it wasn't for the great food i would not go back but i will return and put up with the slack service in search of great food.
Satya in Sandringham: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
There are four Indian restaurants in Sandringham, all offering something a little different from each other – for better and sometimes for worse. Satya has the reputation of not only being the best of the four, but also one of the best Indian restaurants in Auckland. The three reviews it has had so far on this site (to June 08) have all shown great enthusiasm for the food with remarkable 10 out of 10 ratings. While the food is often very good, I don’t think I could go quite so far.
It’s true that the Dahi Puri is superb, the Paratha bread is a guilty pleasure, the Dosa’s are excellent (the coconut chutney is lovely), and many of the side dishes and mains are equally delicious. One of my favourites is the Murgh Badami: a dry curry of chicken cooked with curry leaves, garlic, large pieces of ginger, green chillies, whole almonds and potato. It’s a very good dish, rustic and unpretentious - much like the rather sad and underwhelming décor, but thankfully much tastier. The décor is particularly odd, with dark purple and pink paint splashed over the walls (with a broom by the looks of things) and Indian fabric hanging at random. This quirky pins-and-Sellotape charm almost makes up for the lack of genuine warmth and comfort, but judging by the number of takeaways it seems that many people prefer to enjoy Satya from the comfort of their own home.
However, my issue with the food is that many of the curries seem to use one of two basic sauces: a tomato base (a rather strong biting sauce that lacks subtlety in my opinion), and what I assume is a creamy cashew base. It’s possible (as happened to us on one occasion) to order three or four curries only to discover that they are essentially all the same thing: rich tomato gravy with a different main ingredient.
While there is a certain honest appeal to having the kitchen mere feet away from where one sits, it can be somewhat disconcerting to see large white plastic buckets of precooked chicken waiting to be tossed into one of the two base sauces and turned into a dish. Also, I’ve always felt strongly that the quality of the water an eating establishment offers its customers can say a lot about the place. It’s often the first thing you put in your mouth at a restaurant, so if it’s a bad experience it doesn’t always bode well. There is nothing less appetising than the taste of plastic, or the contents of the fridge, or old water pipes, or just foul water. The rather bitter eau de tap at Satya is best avoided - and while we’re on the subject of plumbing, best you stay clear of the toilets too.
So yes, the food at Satya can be good, but it can also be bad, and as restaurants go it is certainly not without its ugly side.
I went out with three friend's recently, and really enjoyed the food. It was excellent. The best indian I have ever had. Satya you are onto a good thing here. Highly recommended. And its BYOW!
An interesting place - serves some of the best curry in NZ. Always busy, the last time I went we had the last table left. If you don't know it, its a small intimate place, more set up for take-aways than dine-in, to be honest. I reckon it only has 6 small tables, 7 at a squeeze. The chefs cook the food no more than 2 metres away from the tables, so you can see, smell & hear what is going on. Service is basic, but I think it adds to the experience. Food is always great & tasty - have eaten there 3 or 4 times now..
This is our local and we love it... recommend the Dahi Puri entree, the Palakura Lamb and Palakura Paneer, Lamb Korma, and the Mango Chicken for kids. We've enjoyed the dosa too. Old favourites like Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala are done well too. The service is friendly but we tend to get take out, as the restaurant is very small. NB When we go to pick up our takeout we also buy mango chutney and yoghurt from Khyber Spice Invader, opposite. We often go to Satya when we have family visiting from out of town - general consensus is that it's the best Indian meal they've had in NZ.
