Yum, this is a great Thai. Dinner here twice in a month. First time I had the yellow curry duck and the 2nd visit the green curry fish.
Not sure which one I liked the best.
Service is quick and friendly, seating is comfortable, menu is extensive and food is extra tasty and perfectly cooked.
Nice roti bread too.
Best of all the prices are very cheap. 2 course dinner and drinks for 4 people $68. WOW !!

The criticism about portion size is valid. Last time here, I thought they needed to address it.Don't think much has changed portion wise. Must say that it's an issue for several Asian sitdown restaurants.
However we resolved this problem by having 3 mains to share (for 2 of us) instead of going through the entrees/main/dessert routine. The food is very good.
So we had the Thai Green curry (good size), Beef stirfry with satay sauce (too small), and a Pad Thai (too small). The dishes were all very tasty. Pity they can't get their heads round portion size, as you wouldn't be able to get into this place, if they did.

Had a enjoyable time here with my two DineOut mates last Friday evening. Everything was the same about this place since our last visit here over a year ago except for one thing.........and that is, while their prices has remained the same, their food portion size has amazingly gone down by almost half!!
I was quite shocked to see this happening. The two entrees we ordered seemed rather miniscule in size compared to the last time we were here. This were plates of Satay Chicken Sticks and Curry Puffs.......each piece were a little more than a mouthful per person. So were our three main courses.........A Fish Salad, A Chicken Pad Thai, and a Panang Curry. All smaller bowls or plates full than our previous visit. We were still feeling a little hungrier than usual by the time we have finished our mains. So we had to order a dessert each...........being an unusual practice for us. Even though the place was very busy on the night, I feel there is no excuse for reducing food portion sizes. Compared to the many other Thai restaurants in the city, Thai Country Cafe is certainly very poor value for money!!

The service here was fabulous. Between two young ladies who promptly took drinks orders, kept an eye out for when we the menus were closed having made our choices, and checked on the quality of our meals we felt extremely well looked after. We shared a prawn pad thai and a satay chicken with fresh vegetables. The food was fabulous and the serving sizes very generous, plnety of prawns and chicken and lots of vegeies. We also shared a roti which was perfect. The restaurant was busy but our meals arrived promptly and would definitely return.

8 of us dined here early on Friday night ay 5.30pm. Quite a nicely decorated restaurant, very comfortable chairs and tables. Not too many others in here so we had our orders taken quite quickly. Food came out quite quickly too. I had the entree platter for two (sharing it) and you get 10 different items and some dipping sauce. All very tasty. Then mains I ordered the crouching tiger. Luckily they put the insanely hot dipping sauce in a separate bowl, which i tried once and decided not to try again. nice but ULTRA HOT !! The beef was very nice, yummy and perfectly cooked. I also had some very yummy roti bread. Very friendly cafe, the toilets need a bit of a freshen up but other than that an awesome experience. Good sized kids meals are almost adult proportions. 2 young kids can easily share one potion. The entrees for kids were huge too. Really good value and they are also in the Wellington Entertainment book.

Stopped in here a couple of weeks ago on a Monday we were thinking about getting takeaways but decided to eat in as it was a Monday and reasonably quiet.
We got fresh spring rolls for a starter to share and then Pad Thai to share as a main. The spring rolls were passable with a nice dipping sauce but the Pad thai was way too sweet. Service was great, friendly and quick and the Beer Lao beer went down really well with dinner.

This Thai restaurant has become our first choice for thai food and has overtaken my previous very hot favourite which is identified in earlier reviews. The staff must read the reviews, the change in manner is a transformation. Last night the wait ladies were so engaging, smiling and chatting brightly. The restauranmt was fully booked out. A notice on the door said only takeaways - no tables spare. We had booked and so had two very large groups who were seated in the main area. We were shown to the little annex where there is only two tables and it was ideal. We could people watch in the main room and also the passers-by. As usual waitress and water appeared immediately, we know what our food preferences are so we rattled those off with the contribution from the waitress as to what degree of spiceness we would like. The food was lovely and i cannot agree the portions are frugal. I thought they were very generous.Mother nature wanted to spoil the night with a considerable " shake and rattle" earthquake but thankfully not enough to put us off our food. I repeat this restaurant deserves patronage.

Super friendly staff. Had the 2 person mixed platter entre and the special spiced lamb dish. MMMMM. Good prices too, 4 of us for $72 and they also accept the entertainment card ! Legend.

Wow, what a nice friendly local gem of a restaurant. Tons to choose from on the menu including a really good kids menu. Nice and clean, nicely decorated, solid chairs and tables super friendly staff and VERY reasonably priced. Pretty much sums it up, apart from the food which was fantastic and quickly delivered to our table. Lots of people dining too. Lots of parking nearby. Have been here once before, but will definitely be back for sure ! My fav Thai restaurant in NZ !! ps Kids meals are HUGE, kids under 8 (2 kids can share one meal) they are HUGE !!!!
Good value.

I have been here a few times. The satay chicken and steamed fish would have to be some of the best in Wellington. The other dishes are tasty too but as mentioned by other reviewers tend to be on the small side.
The atmosphere is good with wooden tables.
The takeaway area is seperate from the main dining area.

My first return to this restaurant since May 2008 and in my view last nights experience was a decided improvement although I did rate the restaurant reasonably well in 2008. The staff are very pleasant but I think you have to engage with them, Thai are retiring people and do not usually initiate conversation. When we arrived around 6.30pm Sunday night there were only 2 people inside but as the night went on I counted 32 at peak. Noisy but not overly, 2 tables had group bookings obviously. Our service was prompt and water was delivered as soon as we were seated. We order a mixed combo entree(consisting of 5 pieces each) there were 4 of us and they were delicious. Not overcooked and the chicken satay skewer was very tender, accompanied by a satay and chillie sauce dish. 4 Mains were ordered which were shared with 2 bowls of steamed rice between us. Good servings and lovely Thai flavours, the variety of dishes were enjoyed by all of us. The desserts were particularly good for an asian restaurant. Coconut icecream with lychees and mudcake with coconut icecream were very nice. The mudcake was moist and delicious. A very pleasant experience from this relatively unhearalded thai restaurant. It deserves patronage.

The food is why you come here. Service was a little slow due to the place being busy and not enough service staff. Highly enjoy the beef salad.

My husband and I took our 2 1/2 year old daughter out looking for a quiet family friendly restaurant, with good food, good service and good prices, and this is exactly what we found at Thai Country Cafe! Our dishes were exceptional, and the kids menu very good value, with a choice of 3 items and a free drink for $12!
The staff were all very friendly and the service was quick and efficient, but they didn't try and rush you out the door either.
I would highly recommend Thai Country Cafe, we will be going back very soon to make our way through their extensive menu!
Yum!

Us three friends tried the Thai Country Cafe in Tawa for dinner last night.
They were quite busy with lots of other diners present.
Tried two entree dishes. The five Curry Puffs at $6.00 a plate were small, but nice and tasy. Equally so were the four Chicken Satays at $7.00 a plate.
We then ordered three mains which were:The Masaman Curry mains at $16.00. This was desribed as tender prime lamb with potato and onion in a rich spice mixture with coconut milk. This was a very tasty and spicy dish.
We had it with complimentry rice and Roti bread at
$2.50 per plate.
Also equally as good was the Stir Fry with Chilli and Thai Basil (Pad Grapow)Chicken mains at $16.00.
However the third mains we had was very disappointing. This being the Pla Manow Steamed Whole Fish with Chilli and Lemon Dressing at
$23.00. It tasted quite bland. So we had to ask for extra Lemon slices to give it some extra taste.
We shared only entree - Coconut Ice cream with Lychees at $8.00. This was very nice. Our young Thai waitress was very friendly and made us feel very welcomed. However in comparison the Manager/Cashier lady seemed less friendly and had no customer contact which I felt was a real shame.

Dined here on Thursday with my three others, including a 10 year old child. She was more than happy with her sweet & sour pork, chocolate mud cake and coke. My Inaru (sp?) salad was nice - I'd never had it before, and my banana roti for dessert was enjoyable, but the dinner portions were a bit on the small side. If you were on a budget and wanting to not pay for either a starter or dessert, I think you'd be a bit hungry. Friendly staff, and a large menu of choices. Would recommend to others. But recommend having something to nibble on before you have your main course.

I organised a function for 50 at Thai Country cafe recently.
The staff couldn't have been more helpful with the organisation.
On the night everything ran smoothly. The food was exceptional quality and really good value for money.
I would recommend this place to anyone and am already looking forward to going back.

This was our first time at Thai Country Cafe after the many years of living in the Northern Suburbs. We left wondering why we hadn't tried it before and will definitely return. The stand out of our meal was the Tom Yum Soup - this was delicious with just the right level of heat for us. After the Tom Yum the mains seemed a little mild but they definitely left us feeling full and satisfied. Take your time to read the extensive menu - there's lots to choose from.

Have been here a number of times, have on been on week nights and is always quiet with only a few people dining. Staff are lovely. Food is good, its never as good as you are going to get in Thailand but it does the job, I find it hard to find a good authentic Pad Thai, this is the best so far although I had to ask for some crushed peanuts and lemon. Reasonably priced. Would recommend

I went here with a big group for dinner on a Friday night. The staff were attentive and helpful. Overall the food was really average - the sort of thing I could make myself at home with a good curry paste. It was still reasonably tasty if a little uninspiring, but with cheap BYO, this is not a bad option for a cheap and cheerful dinner with a group. We were quite rowdy by the end of the evening and the staff (and other patrons) were very tolerant of our vocal group which was appreciated!

Being partial to Asian cuisine, and living fairly close by, we visited this northern suburban cafe for the first time for our regular Saturday night dinner out last weekend. It was a fairly quiet night, and, being cold, we were glad to be seated in a cosy part near a heater. Sharing as we usually do, we started with the red curry-based spicy fish cakes which proved to be a very good selection as an entree. We followed this with the most popular of the Isarn (Northern Thai) dishes, larb, consisting of minced pork (our choice of meat) on a bed of lettuce leaves. It was nicely spiced, but perhaps a little plain. Our other choice of main from the moderately priced comprehensive menu was the lamb with green curry and veges which proved much more to our personal liking. Indeed, all three dishes were very tasty, and served medium spicy, as ordered . The decor was very pleasant, as was the friendly and efficient service. Being BYO for wine added to the attraction for us (with corkage $3 per bottle), but we also noted that the wine menu as an alternative was reasonably priced. All in all, it was a pleasant and inexpensive dining experience, and the cafe deserves to be well supported.

Just got back from an early meal at the Thai Country Cafe. Our expectations were not high but they should have been- it was brilliant. All of our food had taste and was nice and spicy (we are spice fans). We were very impressed and we have eaten in Thailand and a few Thai places around Wellington. The cherry on the cake was the proper kids menu- no chicken nuggets here. Our 6 year old came out asking when we could go again and declaring it her best meal out ever. If you look on the website, click kids menu and the download tab it will come up. We will be finding excuses to go again soon. I will dream about the chicken larb tonight.

What a gem this is - located on the main road of Tawa! We have been to Thailand and enjoy the cuisine so looked forward to visiting after reading some of the previous reviews. The area is quite spacious, but the walls are decorated with Thai silk hangings and there are also Thai statues, which make this restaurant more inviting. The food here is really good. We started with the mixed appetisers and although they were fried, they were light, full of flavour, and not greasy. I'm not a huge fan of curry, but love duck, so thought I'd be adventurous and ordered the duck red curry, asking for it to be mild. It was tasty and wasn't too spicy so I really enjoyed it. The pad thai was also good. I hoped to have room for dessert but didn't, as the servings were generous and good value for money. The service was very friendly and attentive.

We went to the Thai Country Café on Friday night and found it to be a good middle-of-the-road Thai restaurant. The Tom Yum and Tom Kha Gai were great, although the word “Hot” must not have made it to the kitchen since they were both very mild. The Chicken soup was apparently also very good. In terms of our other dishes, the Pad Thai was a bit gluggy, but the other dishes were all quite good. Since the rest of our company are not into hot food at all, we asked for a zero-mild spice level which they accommodated well. The desserts were nothing special. We also did have a slight glitch whereby they charged us twice for the desserts, so I suggest double-checking the bill before leaving. We would happily return.

Went here for dinner on Saturday night. We booked, but probably didn't need to as there were only a few people here, which was strange because it's very yummy and very cheap.
Staff were very friendly and we had our choice of tables, so we chose one by the heater. BYO wine too =)
Heaps to choose from on the menu and they have a good selection of wine (even though it's also BYO).
We had entrees that had a bit of everything and they were all deep fried, but nice.
Mains came out in good time and they were very yummy. I had the red curry duck, mmmmm, just the right amount of herbs and spices - sometimes duck can be oily, but this oone was awesome. Their roti is very nice too.
We finished it off with chocolate mud cake, also noticed that they have roti desert. (maybe try that one next time). They are also in the entertainment books so we got a good discount too.
Will definately be back for more sometime soon.

I have consistently had great meals at the Thai Country Cafe. The staff are very friendly and the food is reasonably priced for a restaurant and comparably priced to other restaurants. If you do the dishes as takeaways, you'll find it is rather expensive in comparison to other takeaways.

I agree with the previous reviewers, the service is very good. Water refreshed constantly and orders appear on table in no time at all.Food was tasty and the dessert offerings are very imaginative for an asian resturant. Try the Coconut Icecream- delicious. The menu prices are up there with city counterparts so eating in the suburbs does not mean cheaper.
